With a baby ham, higher protein is okay so don't panic that you've been overfeeding too much Definitely bring it down but feeding a lot before now won't have done any real damage. Baby/growing hams (as well as pregnant mumma hams) need plenty of protein anyway

It doesn't sound as though any of you really need worry about having fed too much, certainly not to the extent where it will have done any harm, my point was more about the type of meat to feed rather than the amount although it is always worth bearing in mind that we can overdo proteins in general & possibly meat in particular.
Food for thought as they say I was just hoping to clarify a few points & not make anyone worry!

That's good to know, I think sometimes one thing leads on to another especially when it comes to food lol, is it safe and if so how much

Thanks for clarifying Cypher

I read through this thread and it is very useful. Learned some new things!

I've never fed any meat, cooked or freeze dried, to my boys. But I might try it out sometime.

Thank you Cypher. I never imagined anyone would give a hamster raw meat! We are twice a week meat eaters, and I reckon if cooked meat is fine for us it's ok for a hammy too - and a bit of cold chicken goes down well. As such, I don't know anything much about the difference between freeze dried, air dried meat and so on. If you could just explain the differences that would be a big help From what's said above I'm a bit confused as to whether freeze dried, air dried and so on, are cooked dried meats or uncooked dried meats. We also eat fish a couple of times a week so give a bit of that to our hammy as well. I tend to only give fresh meat or fish during out of cage time so it doesn't get hoarded and go off.

Both freeze & air dried are uncooked meat Serendipity, both processes retain nutrients while preventing bacterial growth, so while still raw they are different to fresh raw meat, sorry I don't quite know how best to explain it!
In very simple terms air drying is like the ancient practise of hanging meat out in the sun till it's dried but done in a slightly more sophisticated & technical way.
Freeze dried is frozen then exposed to low heat to evaporate the ice crystals.
I don't know of any established reasons why one is better than the other all I have to go on there is my own experience of trial & error & not all appear to be of the same quality of safety, Tigeria is air dried & keeps really well whereas Dokas is air dried & both me & others have found it goes mouldy over time, the only freeze dried one I've tried is thrive & while the quality seems ok (although it can have an odd smell!) none of my hams approved!
For meat eaters I think just giving a little home cooked meat now & then like you do is probably the best option really.

Thank you I am clearly very uneducated about such things lol. Is it the kind of things astronauts eat?
