Burgess hamster food date
Hi today I got the burgess hamster food that I ordered from the UK and the expiration date says 6/17/17 and I dont think I will be able to use it all by then! Is it fine if I use it past that date? Or will it be bad for them?

Re: Burgess hamster food date
It won't hurt them, but it's also not going to benefit them. The issue with offering these foods after a few months of sitting, is that the nutrients begin to break down again and it's really not quite as fresh. I'd just try to use as much of it as you can before it runs out

Re: Burgess hamster food date
A good guideline is only using foods for 6 months, and at that point replacing them with a new bag of food.Around 6 months, you end up losing your vitamins at the very least which is a crucial part of nutrition(and it would be incredibly difficult to get the right amount through fresh foods, especially staying within a reasonable amount for extras instead of creating an unbalanced diet which will have terrible results).

Re: Burgess hamster food date
I would just put the bag in the freezer keeping out just enough for say a week (use air tight plastic storage boxes for both) that way you should get an extra month out of it, it's not bad for them as such but the food does lose nutritional value over time, I keep my freshly made mix in the freezer for up to three months.

Re: Burgess hamster food date
With food that close to it's expiry date I would yes.
When you defrost it make sure it's still in an air tight container btw, that way the food won't get damp.

Re: Burgess hamster food date
Even frozen I wouldn't go more than a month after the use by date, but that's up to you, it won't go off just gradually lose nutritional value.
