Default Homemade feed?

Does anyone mix their own hamster mix?
If so, what recipie do you use and do you personally make species specific mixes or give all hamster species the same mix?

Creating a homemade mix is extremely tedious and complex, it's not for just anyone. I know members like Cypher create their own homemade mixes, so contacting someone like them directly would be a good option if you really want a homemade food.

As for your question on species specific mixes,
Syrians and robos can be fed on the same diet. Any nutritionally complete diet is suitable for them as neither species is prone to diabetes
Russians and Chinese hamsters should be fed on a diabetes friendly diet only. Burgess dwarf is best for this purpose

Good luck

I use a commercial food as a base for my mix, and add extras on top. My main hamster mix has been similar for over 5 years so it's seen a lot of hammies born, have pups and live out their lives. I wouldn't want to make any guarantees for other people about it so just use it for my own hammies (it's not 'scientific' or calculated with lots of %s). I use this for my Syrians, Chinese, Winter Whites and used to use it for robos when I had them.
I have a different mix for the duprasi (a mix of 2 commercial gerbil foods) and for the Campbells (there again a commercial base with extras, but a different recipe which isn't mine to share ).

I do make my own hamster food, as does Cypher. I can give you a couple of links for threads which do go over this in a little more detail. Here's one link.l This is my own thread about my hamster's diet.

You can feed a Winter White, Hybrid, Campbells and Chinese all the same food (it must be sugar free though if it's being shared by Hybrids, Campbells and Chinese). Theoretically, a Syrian, Robo and pure bred Winter White (must have a pedigree) can eat the same food, but typically Syrians prefer eating bigger chunks and dwarfs prefer eating smaller seeds.

You may want to adjust food depending on your hamster's likes and dislikes though, so it isn't really a one size fits all.

I don't have a specific recipe really. My food evolves as I get to know my hamster better. I do have a list of ingredients and quantities though, with all the nutritional information worked out. Bear in mind that the nutritional aspect will never be 100% accurate.

Starting with a good base mix (Harry/Hazel Hamster for Syrians and Burgess Dwarf for all other species) and then adding to it would be the easiest way.

Thank you all!

I'm going to buy a bag of Harry hamster from viovet when I order, so I'll use that as a base and add to it

That's a very good idea, and will provide your hamster with plenty of nutrients. However, make sure when mixing things in, you weigh the proportions carefully, accounting for all the nutritional values and how adding one thing will decrease another etc. Good luck

I'm used to mixing feeds luckily as I do it for my hedgehogs! Otherwise I'd be so confused
