Question Can I give vegetables for my hamster everyday?

I want to know if I can give a little of broccolli or carrot for my hamster everyday, because since I bought him I do this but I don't know if it's right or wrong.

Hello. Sorry you haven't had any replies yet! Usually when you first get a hamster it's best to give veg every 2 or 3 days until their stomachs get used to it. Too much too soon could possibly give them diarrhoea. Within a couple of weeks, when you have gone from every 3 days to every other, day, and they are fine, you should be able to give some every day. Just a very small piece about 1cm cubed size (doesn't have to be square - that's just an idea of size). There are many safe veg and some unsafe ones. I tend to give one out of broccoli, carrot, cauliflower, green beans, sugar snap peas, baby corn - and try and give a different one each day, so not the same one every day. Unsafe ones are onion, garlic and tomato. There are others, but I just stick to safe ones Lettuce and cabbage aren't generally recommended. A tiny little piece occasionally should be ok but I prefer to stick to the others that aren't a problem.

It can be raw or cooked as long as the cooked is just plain boiled. Raw is better really, but if you've cooked some carrots or broccoli for tea then saving a bit for the hammy can be good!

If you've been giving it every day and your hammy is fine then it should be fine to keep giving a bit every day. They love fresh food and love veg usually and it's good for them. Needs to be washed first obviously!

Giving fresh foods daily isn't the best idea, even with a hamster who is used to getting fresh foods.Too much of a good thing is entirely possible!

Raw vegetables when safe are generally better for hamsters and humans,as the cooking process does destroy nutrition(hence why other foods for example chicken should be given freeze dried rather than cooked as this is superior in nutrition and also happens to be more natural). However in some cases cooking is absolutely necessary as otherwise some foods would be harmful raw!

I've never had an issue with giving veggies daily, but I only give about a quarter sized amount. Naturally, a certain percentage of a wild hamster's diet would be vegetables so it's definitely beneficial! Raw is much better than cooked, but feeding cooked veggies on occasion won't hurt them a bit

I give veg everyday, only a little piece, but it's definitely something I give to form part of their daily diet, rather than just a treat.

I usually feed it raw, but if I've cooked veg for my dinner and forgotten to put a piece aside, then they get it cooked.

I give fresh veg daily. I always make sure he gets a variety and I steam mine. Harvey loves his daily veggies.

I always begin mine slowly but it doesn't seem to take them any time at all to adjust to the new foods so they get fresh veg everyday, often a small piece of two or three veg & plenty of variety which is key.
I don't have a problem with giving lettuce or cabbage, as long as they don't get the same each day it's fine & a tiny piece of ripe tomato flesh, no skin or seeds is fine too.
Potato & sweet potato must be cooked but the majority of veg are best raw.

Thanks for all the replies!! I'll continue giving a small piece every day because my hamster is already used to it and I never had a problem doing this.

I always give my dwarfs small pieces of coli, broccoli, peas, sliced runner beans and avocado, which they simply love. 1-2 a week a small portion of baby food - rice & veg & chicken. The usual Harry Nut mix I augment with all sorts of nuts. Steamed fish and chicken occasionally. I give them a small drop of cod liver oil which is apparently good for them and their fur...

Cod liver oil is much better suited to dogs and cats, while for hamsters if fed frequently it could most likely cause problems. As a rare treat it would probably be fine as long as it's a high quality product though
