I wouldn't sprinkle the powder on his food, it's not essential he has it now anyway but you could try mixing it with water to see if he'll drink it, I'm guessing you're giving it for the calcium rather than protein as there are much easier ways to give extra protein.

Broccoli would be an excellent example of a food with naturally occurring calcium There really is no need to add lactol(which isn't exactly a healthy extra anyways, especially not compared to simple and pure foods like broccoli). Not only would broccoli add beneficial calcium,it would add healthy dietary fiber and protein among many other things.I think if you took time to figure out the benefits of various hamster safe fresh foods you could sort a perfect variety to work with and get what you're looking for!

Mushu loves broccoli and already has it quite frequently, so I do not think he should have any more.

I am not entirely sure why Souffle feeds milky foods daily to her hamsters who are under 6 months old - I think it was the B vitamins? I am not a breeder though!

If you don't really know why you're giving it to him then it might be an idea to ask souffle, if he's getting other extras he may not need it now.

I found where Souffle told me about the milk! Sounds as though milk is just generally good for small animals and beneficial for their fur in particular.

I do agree it probably is not essential. I guess I was just trying to do the best for Mushu so he is as healthy as possible! But then again if he does insist on pouching his porridge...

I have been reading up on impacted cheek pouches and it seems like you would only notice if there was a visible lump in the pouch. The amounts of porridge Mushu has managed to pouch have been so tiny that you can’t tell they are in his pouches, particularly due to all his fluff. How can I find out if they are stuck in there?

It doesn't sound essential then Just a suggestion. There are lots of extras hammies can have Hemp seeds are supposed to contain every vitamin and mineral there is. Hammies like most kinds of fresh foods. The weetabix sounds easier Newt liked scrambled egg and I added a little bit of milk to that. Just scramble an egg in a mug with a tiny dash of milk and put it in the microwave for 20 to 30 seconds

Scrambled egg sounds good as Mushu loves egg. This is probably going to sound stupid, but how do you scramble eggs? I thought you were meant to heat them with butter or something but I don’t know because I jate scrambled egg myself so never make it!

Hmm maybe I should get aome hemp seeds

From that I would assume souffle was referring to the vitamins in the weetabix more than anything else so you don't need the milk & he really should get all the vitamins he needs from his mix really.
If a pouch is impacted you can feel it as well as see it, any lump that stays put for a while is a possible indication of impaction. It's pretty unlikely you need worry but for peace of mind you could just skip the wet food!
I wouldn't worry too much about needing add this & that, it's easy to get carried away & end up unbalancing the diet which can be just as bad as not having enough of something.

Sorry, I only quoted parts of what Souffle said which I think made it come across differently - Or, maybe I misunderstood in the first place! Either way, I see your point and I trust your advice very much... Ahhh I hope he doesn’t have impacted pouches

Thanks so much for the info on impacted pouches. I will keep a close eye out for any symptoms. The problem is with Mushu that he has pouched such tiny amounts of porridge that they do not form a lump in his pouches so I would not know if they were still in there or not. It is scary, really.
