Default Re: Greenies or Whimzees?

Whimzees are not anywhere near being "expensive".Sure the larger ones cost more, but the small hamster sized ones are really inexpensive. The hedgehogs and alligators do cost more, but they last longer,so it isn't like you're paying more just for something that looks nicer.

Purchased in bulk,Whimzees are also even more affordable. This is especially true of discount pet supply websites(Chewy in the US,for example).

For US hamster owners wishing to use Chewy, the 24 count alligator small chews are extremely cheap(less than a dollar per chew):
https://www.chewy.com/whimzees-allig...eats/dp/127088
Or the XS 48 count toothbrushes:
https://www.chewy.com/whimzees-tooth...-dog/dp/127073

Meanwhile a bulk pack of teenie Greenies(way lower quality and definitely not worth buying to begin with)costs far more.Whimzees are by no means expensive if you know the right way to buy them, but of course when you buy them individually or at ridiculously high costs you're going to spend more but are also getting ripped off in a way!

Considering Whimzees are also good for dogs(unlike Greenies which are known to cause serious digestive upset in dogs, and the ones with grain have wheat which is absolutely terrible for dogs and should never be fed to dogs under any circumstances)they are much more useful.Greenies also contain unspecified fruit dyes, which instantly makes it unsafe for hamsters as the fruit could easily be a toxic variety. They have added minerals and vitamins as well, which can result in an imbalance(Whimzees do not,or it would be one only and in minimal amounts)and this is a serious concern since there is no way to regulate how much is ingested at once with chews like this especially since a lot of minerals and vitamins can be toxic in inappropriate levels

I plan to buy 2 mediums, since I only have one hamster (who hardly chews).

Sounds like a decent plan, but it doesn't hurt to have bulk packs and store them in airtight containers!Even if you only buy an 8 pack of the smallest toothbrushes(in store at Petsmart they definitely have these for Whimzees)it is still more cost effective than buying singles.Sometimes you'll even get sales with Petsmart, which I myself have done, and then those smaller packs become less than $2 with the Petsmart card(forget what it's called, but it definitely is a good thing to have for US pet owners).

I love both chews, but whimzees are definitely superior for all the reasons that have already been mentioned!
Whimzees-
-natural
-variety of shapes
-vegetable based (no animal by-products)
The only issue with greenies is of course the gelatin in them so only give them as an occasional treat

I buy a bag of mini toothbrushes, so depending on your hamster, some completely demolish them. I'd probably buy a couple small Whimzees or Greenies to see if your hammy likes them or not.

My Syrian likes her mini toothbrush Whimzee, she likes to pouch it & relocate it often. She amazes me how she knows exactly where she place it last

I can only buy individual wimzees here but they're 15p for the mini toothbrushes my Russians have so it's only £1.50 for 10. I buy several in each colour since they all prefer different colours (Marcello - every colour, Stephano - green, Francisco - beige).

Greenies are soft so I don't think they'd work well to keep their teeth trimmed. I used one once for my Syrian and she managed to tear entire pieces off.

Greenies are fortified and much softer. Not as safe for hammies.

Whimzees are where it's at!

Where are you finding Whimzees for 15p?! That's cheaper than any of the individual prices I've seen.

I think the smallest ones are 12p at Jollyes. I bought some from there when I was visiting a friend and they were so cheap. Unfortunately, I don't live near Jollyes.
