Definitely FelicityAnn, it's like giving the hams a little garden
You may want to monitor how much they eat at first some go a bit mad & other may ignore it the first few times, I just give mine the saucer in the evening, leave overnight & if there's anything much left put it back into the light & give it back next evening, there's not usually a lot left as they enjoy digging in it as much as eating it!

ETA I should probably mention here that if you use herbs or medicinal plants (things like dandelion) then you do only want them to have a little nibble & not leave lots in the cage, mostly with aromatic herbs they won't eat much anyway but should still be monitored.
I have a pot of dandelions growing on my windowsill (& daisies, chickweed, plantain... a weed filled sill, I'm a bit mad lol!) but only give them a leaf now & then with their veg, I wouldn't put the plant in the cage, if I put dandelion in a mixture in the little pots or saucers I just add a few seeds & the actual plant will still be tiny when they get it so they won't have too much.

Hamsterita here are some "tiny sprouts" from my jar, this is buckwheat I started yesterday morning so it's been growing a day & a half roughly & is ready to eat now, if the little sprouts (the tail like bit!) gets much bigger they are past their best, with the jar method they are still really eating the grain/seed just with slightly different nutritional benefits & more moisture, when you grow in the saucer they are eating the plant, they might still eat the seed but most of the goodness is in the plant & will be different to the seed.
I hope I'm not making this sound complicated!!

I've got a few pots & saucers on the go right now so I'll take more photos as they progress.

That looks good Cypher, it makes more sense when I see a picture of how things should look for a non-gardener type like me lol. When you do quinoa is it just the same stuff you can buy at the supermarket or health food shop? I just googled it and seen that it comes in all sorts of colours, are they all suitable? I never realised it came in red and black.

Hamsterita, I just bookmark thread/pages on my internet browser in to a folder I made called "Hamsters" (how original lol). I use firefox so it's bookmarks but I think it's favourites in internet explorer.

I have organic black quinoa, there is a slight difference in nutrition between colours but not much, as long as it's just plain dried quinoa it will be fine, I think most supermarkets sell it.
I'll try to get some photos of that too, the hams already had some this week, they usually only get it once a week but I could spoil them & do some more

Thanks for that Cypher. I like the fact that you can grow it and feed it the same day, another thing to add to the shopping list!

I've just started some so photos soon!
I forgot to mention quantities for jar sprouting, it's easy to do way too much, buckwheat about a level teaspoon lasts all four of mine two or three days then I start again, for quinoa about 1/4 tspn is enough for them all to have just the one day.

Thank you Cypher for all this information on growing sprouts - I especially will find this really useful as I will be growing another batch for Pumpkin soon.

Cypher thanks for your explanation (and photo). Now everything is crystal clear. I thought that when you can see the "tail like bit" weren't ready, but it's good to know that some seeds it's exactly that way how should be fed. And I think that to speed the process you can use the method 1 til you get the "tail like bit" and the put them in sand or whatever to grew them (at least that was what I found on the Spanish website referring to sprouts for human intake)

It's amazing that you're taking so many time to explain everything to us and that you're going to take pics. Thank you!!

And thanks Felicity, Drago and BP, , I thought that you were talking about an option in the forum's threads, but I didn't realize that I could use the bookmarks on the navigator for that. Thank you for the tip!

Quinoa.

Tiny black grains aren't the easiest thing to photograph I've discovered but hopefully you can see from these what it should look like.

Just a very small amount, rinsed very well & ready to go.

quinoa1.jpg

After about an hour you can just see it beginning to change.

quinoa3.jpg

It was cold last night so it's been a bit slower than usual but this is about 16hrs & almost ready to eat.

quinoa5.jpg

It does tend to germinate a bit unevenly but it's still fine to use, my quinoa isn't that fresh now so probably a bit slower than it was when I first bought it (can't remember when that was!), I'm waiting for some red quinoa to arrive & will be interested to see if it works about the same.

Sprouting/soaking guide.
The Sproutpeople site has lots of useful info on sprouting, particularly useful if you want to know different soak times for various seeds & grains as soaking correctly can make a big difference.
Not all will be suitable for hams but you can check out the ones you might want to use.

It's no bother at all, I'm totally addicted to growing things (just can't help myself lol!) enjoy taking photos & love seeing hams tucking into healthy treats so I'm more than happy to do it
