Bottle or Bowl
I know most people advise against using a bowl for water, but some people also say that a bowl filled with shallow water provides a natural way to drink. Which is better? Bottle or bowl? I live in the Windy City, where it's always usually a lot cooler. Water wouldn't evaporate that easily. I'm thinking of using a combination of both, a bowl in the Fall and Spring and Winter, and a bottle in Summer.
What do you think?

Re: Bottle or Bowl
It's all based on preference A bowl under a bottle can help keep substrate dry though,as many bottles unfortunately start leaking right away or with time as they grow old.
A shallow resin reptile bowl would be an excellent option, since it would not only provide a water source but depending on the design it could also aid in keeping claws trim. However if you can't find a design that will help keep nails trim it isn't bad,as it mainly just needs to be a good water source.Standard hamster bowls designed to hold food aren't a very good idea unless you somehow find an extremely shallow one,and unfortunately most are 2-3 inches deep which is not good
Other than a bowl under a bottle, the best option would be putting a bowl on a secure shelf that has edges to prevent substrate getting inside.
Providing both at least to begin with is a good idea,as not all hamsters take well to bowls.

Re: Bottle or Bowl
I think like amity said, it's all up to preference! Both work very well and as long as your ham likes it, it's fine to use. I personally dislike bowls simply due to the maintenance needed to keep them clean and free of bedding, but that doesn't make them bad, just a bit more work! If you want to use a bowl that's fine as long as your ham likes it, a bottle is just fine too, and you could use both if you really wanted to

Re: Bottle or Bowl
I would worry about the design of the first one since it has small holes on the top which could be a potential toe trap for tiny hamster feet The second could potentially work though!

Those two could work very well! Both are small enough, and shallow enough.Having had the first bowl in the past I can definitely say that it's an excellent size for a hamster, plus even the regular price is fairly cheap

Re: Bottle or Bowl
The choice between bowl or bottle is up to the ham as much as the owners preference I think, some hams don't seem to like one or the other.
I always give mine both when I first get them & allow them to choose, out of four only one uses a bottle.
Both those bowls look fine to me.

Re: Bottle or Bowl
It's a preference choice really. I only used a bottle for mine as I know that if bedding gets in the bowl it soaks all the water away. I you want to use bowls just make sure you keep checking and keep it clear of bedding

Re: Bottle or Bowl
All mine have bowls on their wooden platforms so no chance of bedding getting into them.

Re: Bottle or Bowl
I have both in my hamster's cage. A bottle and a bowl, just because I'm scared the bottle will get stuck and then she doesn't have any water available. That happened once for my previous bunny, so I prefer to keep both just in case
