Hamster weight
Hi guys
I was just wondering if hamsters differ in weight as I'm a bit worried about my female Syrian Ivy and her weight gain. I have 3 other hamsters including another female Syrian. We weigh them monthly to make sure they are healthy and haven't lost weight and are ill etc.
Ivy is about 4 months old she was a chubby thing when we got her and was not as long as my other female. In december we weighed her she was 145g and a month later she is 185g!
It seems like 40g in a month is an excessive weight gain, she is fed the same diet as my others and they have stayed the same weight. She has the same amount of time out of her cage and isn't pregnant as she has never been near my boys.
Should I be worried or should I put it down to her being naturally chubbier than my other female Syrian who is 165g.
Thanks x

Re: Hamster weight
I've had this very experience myself
My mum and I bought a hamster each from the same litter. The one I chose was the largest of all of them and ended up looking like rat when fully grown LOL (I exaggerate there lol)
I took him to the vet and they too were a bit shocked. I gave them an account of his eating habits and activities and they were a bit stumped and just said giving the healthy food and high activity there's no reason why he'd be this big but because he was the biggest that perhaps this was just his natural size
He died aged 2 years 9 months from old age- no problems.
Sorry that's not much help to you lol! But thought I'd share my experience of having a gigantic hammy lol!

Re: Hamster weight
They can/do vary in weight and size. Not sure if 40g gain is normal or not. If she was young when you got her that may explain it as she is growing. Once she reaches adult size her weight should stay about the same.

Re: Hamster weight
Hamsters do vary as to what weight is healthy for them and I've learnt that you can't go by the numbers alone, it's also good to judge to by how they feel. They shouldn't feel bony but on the other hand, hamsters are not meant to have rolls of fat either.
I've noticed that different hamsters grow at different rates. I don't keep Syrians so I'm not too sure on what is the average weight bracket for the species. With Chinese it's 30-50g and my own Chinese vary between 27g-46g. My oldest boy didn't hit the 40g mark until he was 8 months old but my other boy is already at 40g at 14 weeks old so it really is an individual thing.
