Pip has both, main food in her bowl, treats like pumpkin seeds , sunflower hearts etc I scatter feed so she has a bit of a forage.
When Pip wants treats she goes and stands on the top of her nest box and stares at the tin they are kept in....

Re: bowl or scatter feed
I do a sort of mixture of both. Half the food in the bowl and the rest dumped around the cage. I think if you want to go exclusively to scatter feeding from bowl feeding then half and half can be a good way to swap them over and then gradually swap the proportions until it's all scatter.

Scatter feed - I think she likes pretending to be a hoover and picking it all up before taking it to her hoard! Can't make life too easy for her, can we?

Re: bowl or scatter feed
I start mine off with a bowl & hiding some of the food around the cage in places where I can keep a check on what they eat then move on to hiding & scattering, a lot of the bits in dwarf food (well mine anyway) are so small it can be hard to tell what gets eaten & what just disappears into the substrate so I like to hide most rather than just throw it around but I do scatter some as they love to dig for it.

Re: bowl or scatter feed
James and Matthew are fed in a bowl - they're both fairly lazy and don't tend to bother going to look for their food if it's not where they think it should be. Jessie and Victoria are fed either in a cardboard box that they have the chew open or are scatter fed as they seem to enjoy working for their food.

Re: bowl or scatter feed
I like to put it in a bowl so I can keep an eye on it and when it's empty. She doesn't always take food back to her little house
But I think she might prefer scatter feeding, might find it quite fun too! I feed her sunflower and pumpkin seeds as treats from hand though

Re: bowl or scatter feed
Mine certainly enjoy going around their cage and foraging for their meals, but it makes me nervous as I'm unable to know for sure what they're eating, and thus, I always bowl feed (though mine don't seem to care too much how they get their food, more so just that they get it)

Re: bowl or scatter feed
I prefer to do bowl feeding so that I can monitor what he's eating but I think scatter feeding is a great idea and I would love to do that with a hamster in the future. I do like to scatter other bits around the cage like seed and hide treats so that he does have to do some work for food.
