Hi, I've been reading this forum for 4 months in anticipation of getting our hamster, who we picked up yesterday! I boughtqTeddy Hazel hamster, based on the recommendations here, and received some mazuri rodent 6f pellets from the breader to help transition his diet. Since Teddy is only about 6 weeks old, I know I'll have to supplement his food with extra protein since he's young. My question is, should we leave the hazel hamster mix in his bowl all the times? The breeder said that hamsters won't overeat. He hasn't seemed to touch it yet, but has taken the mazuri pellets into his little hidie hole. Also, is giving him fresh protein better than freeze dried or meal worms? Thank you all! I feel like I did so much research for the last 4 months, but the information is overwhelming!

You need a specific ratio of food with mixed diets otherwise you can create an imbalance.Hazel on its own will eventually be fine once you transition though

As for fresh protein vs freeze dried,it depends on if the fresh protein is cooked and animal based. If cooked, then it would not be as nutritious as freeze dried.Think of cooking as a process which destroys at least part of the nutrients(which it does)whereas freeze drying merely preserves the nutrients while removing the moisture so it is just as good as raw protein.Freeze dried is the next best thing to raw,and is nutritionally superior to cooked as well as being the second most natural form.

Freeze dried protein, if you mean chicken or something similar is fine, mealworms are ok either fresh or dried but if fresh pinch the heads off first as they can bite!
Check how much protein you have in your main mix too, if the protein in the mix is adequate then you don't want to feed too much extra.
