Hamster advent calender safe?
Evening hamster peeps!
Just a quick one...basically I got an advent calender for small pets for my 4 hammies to share. I break the chocolate treat into 4 each night to give to them...however I'm a little worried as dunno if a bit of chocolate treat every night would upset there small delicate tummies??
Should I give them a break in between each one..which really defeats the point of a advent calender haha or will they be OK? So far they seem fine
..
Thanks

Re: Hamster advent calender safe?
Every night is a bit much for such an unnatural treat Small animal chocolate drops would contain dairy, which hamsters and other small animals really shouldn't be getting. They can't digest it very well, and so giving it can cause problems especially daily.
Save the treats in an airtight container and feed far more sparingly,no more than once or twice a week. You can do healthier and more appropriate treats daily instead, which will certainly be as appreciated but won't cause any problems

If it is the Pets at Home one, then it is dairy free. Otherwise I would listen to Amity.

Yeah it is the pets at home one
That's good I didn't think they'd sell something bad for them but still wanted to double check. I guess as I'm breaking it up between 4 too it's probably better. Both my girls love it but the boys not so much haha

Re: Hamster advent calender safe?
I still wouldn't give it everyday, maybe every other day, split into four.
Do you have any other small animals that might be able to have some? I bought one for my guinea pig, Oreo, but he hates it so Jasper is getting it instead. Should last him until March !

Re: Hamster advent calender safe?
If it has whey or any seeds, guinea pigs really shouldn't have it.They can't exactly digest seeds well, and they should never have whey etc.It could potentially be shared with rats, mice, gerbils, and other animals with similar dietary needs to hamsters but most likely not rabbits or guinea pigs.

Re: Hamster advent calender safe?
I know I already checked the ingredients for Oreo. It's not like he likes them anyway. Pets At Home normally make them suitable for most species.

Re: Hamster advent calender safe?
They don't even show the ingredients or item online, which is odd.It is hard to make a clear decision for me at least whether it would be beneficial or just junk food without knowing the ingredients.
Just keep in mind no pet shop is perfect,so relying on an item being from a pet shop as an indication for safety is a bad idea.I've seen many products from many pet shops which are completely unsafe,be it Zooplus or Pets At Home(toys have unsafe materials such as chain or possibly using cotton, etc)and as a widely known example we have cotton nesting material!Yes,these places might have wonderful products if you proceed with caution, but that doesn't mean everything is safe

Re: Hamster advent calender safe?
Gordy and Derrick have this one, and I totally agree! They're still getting through Day 1's piece of chocolate as they get a tiny bit every few days!
I swear their advent calendar has more than the Cadbury's one these days?!

Re: Hamster advent calender safe?
I bought one a few years ago for my first Chineseys and it came with about 5/6 small yoghurt-type drops behind every door which was rather a lot for two Chineseys to eat in one day so we'd ration them but they ended up getting bored of them before Christmas had come and we ended up throwing the rest away.
What's the chocolate inside them like these days?
