Default Black Walnut OK for dwarf Winter White?

We have a huge black Walnut (not English) tree in our front field. Would it be ok if I gathered some and got the hulls off and let them season before giving them to Zero? Could he even get into them?

I'm asking as I know that the hulls are poisonous to horses and cows, even though ours have never eaten them.

I'm not entirely sure about the safety, but if they are safe then you need to sterilize them somehow as they come from the outdoors and as such could be exposed to parasites etc.

I don't think they're toxic to all animals but are to some & I haven't found any definitive answers about hams so I wouldn't risk it.
