Default Nuts

One of the breeders at the show today said that nuts shouldn't be fed to hamsters as it makes them gassy?? I'm a little confused because I thought nuts were ok in moderation?! Sweep would hate for his beloved walnuts to stop!

I guess too many nuts could have that effect and I suppose some people might prefer not to feed them for that reason however the Southern Hamster Club still list nuts as being a safe food as an occasional treat and I know that I've seen peanuts in some of the commercial hamster mixes before.

My Chineseys aren't keen on nuts so I don't tend to bother giving them any so I couldn't say from my own experience as to what effect they might have on a hamster.

I know this is controversial but the consensus among exotic vets in my area is that nuts are high in carbs & if your hamster (dwarf) is diabetic to stop giving them seeds altogether. Vet said giving a diabetic seeds is just like giving them sugary treats. I believe this myself.

A lot of people believe really silly things I guess Seeds and nuts are both perfectly fine if not fed in massive amounts!Just use common sense and it is perfectly fine.

That's a new one to me, nuts are normally only fed in moderation due to the high fat content, never heard of them making hams gassy.
Mine have tiny pieces of walnut or pine nuts & monkey nuts, although peanuts are, strictly speaking a legume not a nut, legumes can make them gassy so I don't know if there's a connection there but I doubt it.

CB I think you're getting your food groups a bit confused, nuts are high in fats not carbs & it's hard to group seeds together really as there is a generally starchy group of seeds & an oily group, most of what we call seeds tend to be oily/high in fat not carbs.
It's sugars we avoid in diabetes prone species not nutritious foods like seeds, nuts or grains.

My russian male is well into his 2nd year now and has a loose tumour and has to also have his hamster food mashed up and other things added in due to him having tooth issues as well.

I buy the small bags of mixed nuts from Lidl or Aldi supermarkets that contain walnut, hazelnut, brazil nut and cashew. They are non salted and they get pieces broken off and mashed into his food when I prepare it for him daily. I also grate the nuts to roll his soft food in! A bit like coconut.

His Zooplus hamster mix also had peanuts in, so I break some of these up and add those too in small amounts. Remember too that nuts don`t have the same fats as meat products, so are essentially `good` fats in moderation.

It becomes harder to feed elderly hams when they start to have health issues so imagination is required. I throw in porridge oats, some mashed dry Weetabix, small piece of broken rich tea biscuit and anything else I think will `taste` his food and make it more palatable. I use supreme science selective biscuits for binding it all together. x

I'm not really sure about amounts for syrians pinkneon but a whole walnut is quite a lot of nut! How long does that last him? I'm sure other syrian owners would have a better idea if it's too much or not but maybe half would be better.
I'm so mean lol! mine only get teeny pieces but then they are pretty teeny themselves

He does usually get half or a little piece depending what I pull out first, but just occasionally he gets a whole bit which lasts him forever as it's his a favorite and I'm pretty sure he doesn't want it to disappear!
