I haven't used those for hamsters. But if you have pets at home nearby, you can buy them loose. That may work out cheaper than buying them in the box.

Some people do give dog biscuits as chews - for helping to keep teeth trim. The ingredients of those sound ok - ie nothing nasty listed! But it does say 18.7% glucose - which is sugar basically. So personally I wouldn't want to give them very often - it might keep teeth trim but could also give tooth decay if too much sugar.

One type of dog chew that is good for hamsters and their teeth (and they all seem to go crazy for them) are the whimzee/antos mini sized dog chews - they come as mini toothbrush shapes or mini alligators. They are vegetable based and no sugar.

I don't know if Viovet ship to Ireland but they stock them. I tend to get 4 of the mini singles and give one maybe once a month.

I tend to think of chews (for keeping teeth trim) as different from treats generally. Although some wood chew sticks also have food on them (the Rosewood naturals dandelion sticks are a favourite here - also sugar free).

For treats for taming I used to give the Rosewood little hearts, but pumpkin seeds are very popular for treats too You can just get pumpkin seeds in the supermarket on the bakery counter.

I'm a big fan of Whimzees for my dog and they're much healthier than a lot of biscuits and things like that.Whimzees and Antos are both entirely vegetable based, which means they're completely safe for a lot of different pets. They're generally very affordable too,and I imagine for a hamster they would at least last a few days per chew which is good.

I do agree that the biscuits have a lot of sugar though, even if glucose could be sourced naturally.I'm also not a fan of the vanilla flavouring or colouring,as these could be artificial which is something to avoid in general.

I have used those biscuits for my Chineseys in the past when I've bought them loose from Pets at Home however they weren't a favourite. Can you get the Original Biscrok dog biscuits by Pedigree over there? They're the type used at hamster shows and I've heard that they've got less salt than some other types of dog biscuit. My hams seem to enjoy them although other hamsters seem to have preferences with the flavours.

For taming I've found that seeds have been the most successful. As Serendipity7000 has said pumpkin seeds are a good option but the sunflower hearts are also very popular with my hamsters as they're a bit smaller than the pumpkin seeds.

Thank you for all the replys.
My petstore stocks whimzees and I have been giving them to my hams for the last 2 or 3 years.
We have the Biscrok biscuits here but im very wary of them as I have opened brand new boxes and found mold on the. The boxes were bought from different shops too. I stick to the milky bones in terms of pedigree dog treats to be honest.

I give my hamsters extra seeds as treats too I just like to pick up an extra something every now and again.

Hi! Irish person here! Viovet is great.. minus the £9.99 postage! Petsmart in Dublin do whimzies in case you live near there, I've only been there once, though. The pet discount warehouse in Kildare (near Newbridge I think) also does them. Hope I helped

I am lucky that my Patro'n was already tamed by her breeder. That being said, I have been giving her a variety of different nuts so that she looks forward to seeing me. Tonight she received a cashew.
