Hay?

Perhaps meadow hay or something like that would be nicer?It is generally softer I think,or alfalfa if you cut it into smaller pieces so it's not a risk for the eyes and be extremely careful about any sharp bits.

I don't think timothy would be a good idea for hams though,as it is a more rough fibrous hay(which makes it wonderful for piggies and rabbits)instead of something like a soft meadow hay or alfalfa.

I guess the reason I'm interested in feeding hay is because of Robos natural, wild, diet. After doing a fair amount of reading it seems they do eat grass etc, so given the environment they live in I'm assuming that the grass would be dry and thus resemble hay? Really interested in thoughts regarding this...

As far as I know they do eat small amounts of grass, probably mostly fresh shoots rather than dry grass along with seeds, beetles & other small insects, I'm not sure but they might use dry grass in their burrows in the wild.

So, if they move dried grass around, should we be so concerned regarding their pouches?

We should be concerned about any sharp bits damaging pouches, just because they may do something in the wild doesn't always mean it's entirely safe, wild animals get hurt too.

If you mean garden grass rather than hay you'd need to be sure it hadn't been sprayed with anything & I'd still be wary of what might have been on it.

It's just genuine interest, thanks for answering my questions! Our garden is a haven for nature, my partner never uses spays and stuff.

If you have a hay that has the seed heads in it,that could be a fun thing to offer instead of the dry bits of hay!

It's very soft & green and smells wonderful! I'm not sure if the hams actually eat any of it, but they like sniffing around it in and Rupert sometimes adds a little bit to his bed. I just think it's a nice natural enrichment thing for them.
