Food questions
Hello guys. Well I have a question regarding my hamsters food. Do I have to change her food out everyday? Or only replace till its all gone. I change her water everyday. I also feed her 2 meal worms a day. Just curious about her food. Here is the link to the food she eats.

Re: Food questions
Most people give enough for a few days then refill the bowl when it's empty (if you use a bowl) but that's mostly to prevent picky eating with muesli type mixes.
Are you giving anything in addition to the oxbow? It's too low in protein & a bit high in fibre to be fed alone.

Yes I use a bowl. I feed her 2-3 Meal worms a day in addition to her oxbow food. she also has a very small piece of millet a day as well

Re: Food questions
Mealworms will help up the protein a bit but they are also high in fat so maybe give a small piece of plain cooked chicken once or twice a week for some low fat protein.
Millet is a good addition but she could probably do with a little more variety really & pellet food doesn't allow them to forage naturally although you could still hide some food around the cage rather than put it all in a bowl.
I don't know where you are but in the US Higgins Sunburst, although still low in protein is quite a good mix that can be used in combination with pellets for more variety.

Re: Food questions
In the US Higgins and Mazuri is the best combination!Either one on their own are just not good enough, same with just about all US food to be honest.
A pellet on its own isn't enough variety, while a mix on its own isn't likely to provide the right nutrition. It's all about finding balance

I found the Higgins Sunburst in my city at my local petco. But the petco carries Mazuri products but doesn't seem to have the hamster one.

The hamster product Mazuri did was cancelled a long time ago apparently, but the Rat and Mouse lab block is completely fine for hamsters.

Re: Food questions
You would only need Higgins and Mazuri,no need to keep the Oxbow as a part of the diet as all it would add is fiber which really isn't important since the two foods combined give enough fiber.
As for amounts of each food, the ratio to get 18% protein,6.78% fat,and 7.28% fiber is just a 60% Higgins Sunburst and 40% Mazuri Rat and Mouse ratio.Sounds overly complicated, but really it isn't!Invest in a kitchen scale anyways, they're extremely useful to keep weight checked on and can alert you right away to sudden weight loss or gain which could impact health. You'd just need to measure out 6 grams or 7.2 grams of Higgins and 4 or 4.8 grams of Mazuri, depending on the total you want(10 grams or 12 grams). You could do this every few weeks and set portions of food in containers and keep it in a cool dry place and this would mean not having to prepare the food every single day

Re: Food questions
Do you know if there is any difference in the Mazuri hamster and the rat and mouse? What was the difference between those two? Could the rat product have something bad that hamsters shouldn't have?
