Default Fruit and Winter Whites?

I know that lots of dwarf hamsters are prone to diabetes, but I have heard that purebred winter whites are either less prone, or are not prone at all? Does anyone know which it is?

So, if Archie (my winter white) is either less prone, or not prone to diabetes would I still have to be careful about sugars, or would he be okay to have a little bit of fruit as a very occasional treat?

Low GI fruits would presumably be the safer option, if diabetes is still a slight concern, so the fruits I am considering are cherries, berries, apples, pears, maybe some dried apricot. Would it be better to give dried or fresh fruits, or the same really? Dried strawberries would be quite nice.

Any info on this would be appreciated. It's not the end of the world if he can't have these things, but I do think it's nice when our pets can try lots of tasty things in their lifetime, and fruit has the benefit of being super tasty and nutritious at the same time

I don't know that one I'm afraid - someone else will I thought it was just hybrids, but I could be wrong.

Not too sure on that one myself! However,it would still be wise not to feed fruits all that often anyways just to be safe. Then again,it depends on individual fruits as well as different fruits have completely different nutritional values.

For example, fruits that are lower in sugar could probably be fed as a rare treat, but you would need to be mindful and check the hamster's sugar levels before if possible. It is a controversial issue, but every fruit is not created equal so I do understand both sides of the situation.

Even if you choose not to feed fruit, there are still tons of really healthy vegetables and herbs and all kinds of things that aren't as risky.

I think I saw somewhere that new research says that you shouldn't pick out anything out of mixes and that we should feed fruit occasionally. Don't quote me on that
Also, I am pretty sure that it is that pure bred winter whites are not as prone to diabetes, but still shouldn't be given a lot of sugar, again don't quote me.

Don't ever pick things out of a mix,it will completely change the GA and for a lot of foods that can be very bad. It's best to just start with a fruit-free mix if you're worried about fruit!Same goes for the little pellets that used to be so common to remove. They actually can hold a lot of fiber and vitamins and minerals,so removing them could be very harmful.

No animal should be given a lot of sugar, regardless of if they're prone to diabetes or not.Too much of anything can be very unhealthy, which is why moderation is so important.

It's Campbells Russian, Russian hybrid & Chinese which are prone to diabetes, WW aren't.
Fruit would be fine as a rare treat, do remember that fruit isn't a natural food for any ham so is best not given often.
Even with my diabetes prone species I give the occasional blue berry, or half usually, & they do love them!
A small piece of apple (no skin or pips) is another healthy option.
Dried fruits are much higher in sugar, may contain preservatives & can get a bit sticky so I really don't think they're a good idea.

Why do you remove the skin of the apple cypher?
Does it have more sugar? I thought it would of been healthy because of fibre?

I'm not 100% sure if they can eat the skin or not tbh but unless it's organic I think it best to remove it even though you're right about it having fibre, & most of the vitamins are just below the skin so you don't want to take off too much of a thick layer.

Not sure if it can happen with hamsters but it could be harder to chew the skin as well.Unless you can be sure that there are no pesticides on the skin though it might be safest to remove the skin just to be safe.

I personally wouldn't risk skin as even I,a human, have nearly choked on apple skin.It might be the paranoid motherly side of me coming out,but one can never be too careful with things like that!

I don't know, but I wouldn't risk it. I have a Campbell and I only feed her one banana chip (the animal version, not human version) a week and she gets fresh vegetables almost every day, but in small sizes. And she gets mealworms every now and then. I personally think that's more then enough since I also don't want to risk her getting diabetes.
