Smarties here in the states are nothing at all like M&Ms LOL here Smarts are what is called Sweet Tarts in other places where M&M are candy coated Milk chocolate that was known for not melting in your hands. They were originally created so the Military personal could enjoy a bit of sweet while on the war zone as with the candy coating M&Ms would stay solid even in heat. Though they do indeed do this the candy coating melts on your hands making a colorful tie dyed effect on the hand which is a bit sweaty or moist LOL. I like the original brand which was solid milk chocolate inside the candy coating but M&M/Mars has went a bit crazy of late and now has many many different varieties including Peanut,Pretzel,Crispy,Peanut butter, and Almond. Just recently they have added Honey Nut,Coffee Bean, and Chili Nut where you can vote on which is your favorite new flavor.

Wow that's a lot of flavours. Hmm interesting. Maybe Smarties are Uk and M&M's are American. I think M&M's are a bit bigger anyway. Maybe the crunchy coatings are made from crickets lol.

Smarties

Smarties used to be made by Rowntree before they got taken over by Nestle. I had a factory tour once when I worked for them (in an admin department) and they had these huge copper rotating things that looked like cement mixers, that polished them shiny! I remember they had different colourings for different countries. There was a big thing about blue smarties - some countries they were allowed, some they weren't. Which I can understand now as blue food colouring is supposed to have some issues I think.

Smarties used to use crushed bugs to colour the red shells

Blue is allowed here and some yuppie types made a list to give dietic advise on what each color M&M was a cure for(as if Milk Chocolate is healthy right?) In October they make Dark Chocolate M&Ms which to my taste buds is bitter. At Easter, Valentines and for Harvest Fest they make a white chocolate M&M which I have to refrain myself from inhaling as I love white chocolate LOL

I've never seen a white chocolate M&M I would love those, as for dark chocolate though I love it; it actually makes me ill now.
