Default What type of food should I get?

A few days ago I got my hammie. I bought the food the store was already giving her, I thought that would be the best thing since she's used to getting that type of food. But, it seems like she's only picking out the things she likes. She's currently getting Hope Farms Hamster Select. It contains big and medium size pieces, as well als sunflower seeds, other seeds and corn. She only picks out the sunflower seeds, other seeds and corn. She doesn't like the bigger and medium pieces (I don't know what they are, but they're red and green). So I'm thinking about buying another bag of food which only contains seeds and corn, to see if she eats them all. I'm a new hamster owner so I don't know much about food types and brands, so my question is; after reading this, what type of brand/food do you reccomend me buying?

I would try Harry Hamster. Most Hamsters seem to like it, it has all the nutrients, no sugars and the pieces are a good size for a Syrian. It's the only one ours would eat all of. It is slightly low on protein for a young hamster so could do with supplementing the protein by giving some fresh food - the occasional piece of cheese, or plain cooked chicken, scrambled egg, pecan nut, brazil nut etc - they are all protein foods, but the nuts and cheese maybe only once or twice a week. Chicken when you can. They love any fresh food anyway. It's also good to give fresh veg every 2 or 3 days. Broccoli, carrot, cauliflower, cucumber, are all fine - just a very small piece, like a tiny floret of broccoli or a 1 cm cubed size piece of veg.

Harry Hamster used to be Supreme Harry Hamster but it's called Tiny Friends Harry Hamster now - I think it's available in most countries. Hazel Hamster is the US version and it's the same formula.

It's this one

It's not a bad price at Viovet if you wanted to buy it online. I tend to get two bags at a time to save on postage. Freezing the food first means no bugs can hatch out Apparently all pet food can have minute insect eggs in that could hatch out in warm weather so I don't take any chances now I put both bags in the freezer, take one out after a few days and empty it into a plastic sealable storage container, and when it's empty take the other bag out of the freezer and order some more

Or just get one bag lol!

Thanks to this thread i have just done a nice big viovet food order for the hammies. Hope you find something to suit your new girl.

All my hamsters leave the big colourful biscuits and the green logs ...
