Re: Baby food suitable for hamsters
Great tips on how to freeze some (the ones that are ok to freeze)
I also have the cow and gate ones you listed Cypher - I left them off the list because they show as just discontinued on the manufacturer website, but there are probably still stocks left in the shops.
Some of the puree'd veggie ones at Ella's kitchen are ok - like the one you linked - and would save puree'ing your own veg.
I guess the main thing is to check the label - they can change formulas sometimes as well.
I thought it might be useful did to have a kind of complete safe list. Although in time these products may be discontinued and replaced as well. Also thought it might help Scarlett Empress who is having diffculty reading the labels

Re: Baby food suitable for hamsters
Oh about freezing ... A lot of parents freeze all kinds of baby foods as an ice cube size is a good portion for smaller babies, then two cubes etc. I think they mean don't freeze them IN THE JAR but if you take them out the jar they can be frozen

Re: Baby food suitable for hamsters
I am sure this thread will be very helpful, it would be much easier to go out armed with a list of suitable foods rather than stand in a store for ages trying to read all the labels!
I have read in the newspaper this weekend about a new brand of baby food due to be available in Tesco at the end of the month ( I assume they mean May?) called Heavenly Tasty Organics - it is made with organic produce (obviously!) and dairy free, which might be helpful as I know not everyone likes to give their hamsters dairy produce. So they might be worth checking out!
I like pixiehollow's idea of freezing flat in ziplock bags. I put my baby food in ice cube trays and I put quite a big blob in, but hack bits off with a little serrated knife.

Re: Baby food suitable for hamsters
I had to Google that & see! Had a look at their products here & there may not be many suitable for hams but some of them look like they would make nice treats!

Re: Baby food suitable for hamsters
Great thread serendipity when I heard you mention it on Charlie's thread I wondered what baby foods would be suitable. Good to add variety to their diet as well as extra nutrition.

Re: Baby food suitable for hamsters
Also had a look at those Tesco ones The squishies all seem to have lemon juice in which is a shame. The others are mainly crunchy by the look of it, but I guess they could be softened.
Which reminds me - some have "Amarinth" in. I left a couple of baby foods off the original list because I wasn't sure about Amarinth - does you know if that's ok for hamsters Cypher? The halo bites have it in. The veggie waffles have shallots (onion) or spices. Not sure about the others

Re: Baby food suitable for hamsters
Amaranth is really good for them, mine get a little as an extra.
I think you'll find most baby food with fruit in is going to have a dash of lemon, it's a preservative & stops things from discolouring so it does get used a lot in more natural products.

Re: Baby food suitable for hamsters
Now that's really interesting about amaranth - I was only familiar with it as a seed for sprouting but I just did a search and it seems you can do a LOT with it! Do you just give yours the grain as it is, cypher?

Re: Baby food suitable for hamsters
I'm giving mine puffed grains at the moment although I have given them just plain grains too, the grains are so tiny they easily get lost in the substrate so it can be hard to know how much they eat but I think they like it!
They have had sprouts too but then they seem to like most things I've sprouted.
