Introducing regular veggies?
How would I go about introducing Buzz to fruit and vegetables? He gets the occasional bit of carrot but that's only usually once a month or every few weeks. I've decided that it would be a good idea to supplement his diet with more veggies but I'm not sure how to do it without potentially giving him an upset stomach. How did you introduce your ham to fruits/veggies, and what kinds do you feed them?

Re: Introducing regular veggies?
You just start with a tiny piece, thumbnail size, once every few days then gradually increase to daily if he's fine with that, introduce anything new slowly. Maybe one new veg every few days to begin with until you find what he likes, it's best to give as much variety as you can once he's got used to having them.
This is my veg list, I haven't included fruit though.
Safe veg, those marked * are relatively high in sugar so only feed to diabetes prone species as an occasional treat if at all.
Asparagus (mine have never liked this)
Basil
Broccoli
Brussels sprouts
Common or red clover
Cabbage, green or red
Carrot*
Cauliflower
Celery
Chard
Coriander
Courgette
Cress (not mustard & cress as commonly sold together)
Cucumber
Dandelion leaves & flowers
Endive/chicory
Green beans/runner beans
Kale
Pak choi/Bok choi
Parsley
Peas/mange tout/sugar snap/snow*
Peppers, any colour
Potato/sweet potato cooked only*
Radicchio
Spinach
Squash/pumpkin*
Swede
Sweet corn/baby corn*
Turnip

Re: Introducing regular veggies?
Thank you for that list! I might start by giving him a bit of cucumber or Broccoli and gradually increase that. Hopefully he likes it!

Re: Introducing regular veggies?
Yeah adding veggies to your hamsters diet is great!! Due to the high water levels in cucumber, celery, and lettuce it's important that you keep these in relatively small amounts as the large amount of water can soften their stool and make them sick

Re: Introducing regular veggies?
I started my two on veg when they first came home, just a tiny piece every few days and built it up to daily within about a month. My Syrian is a veggie monster, he really loves them and still eats his mix too, so he gets about an inch chunk (unless high water like cucumber) almost every day. My Robo obviously gets a much smaller piece, about the size of my little finger nail maybe.
Broccoli is what they get most often. Carrot, cucumber, spinach, beansprouts, red/yellow pepper and peas are all really popular too!
Fruit is an occasional treat. They get a piece of maybe a couple of times a month.
