Default Mealworms ...

So I have decided to face my phobia in order to let Sweep try some mealworms! (The things we do for our hammies eh?!) However, I have a couple of questions :

1) Do Syrian hamsters actually like mealworms? Because if not there is no point in me getting any!
2) How many and how often?
3) I am guessing these are a no no but thought I'd check ... Found these. They say they are "fruit flavored mealworms" (http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pe...ealworms-100gm)
4) What is the SMALLEST pack I can get, and where from? I don't want to be left with loads if he doesn't like them!

I can't say whether Syrian Hamsters like mealworms as I've not owned a Syrian Hamster in a long time however I can tell you how often I feed them to my Chineseys.

I'll give one or two to the Chineseys every other day but they also have them within their food mixes. They can be quite fattening if given in excess so I wouldn't be feeding them in vast quantities.

I personally wouldn't be buying the fruit flavoured ones myself as I've found that my hams like them as they are. You can buy them in fairly big packs but other than where sold loose, I've not seen them in smaller quantities which is a pain if Sweep doesn't like them.

My pet shops back home do small containers of both live and dried ones, but haven't seen them anyNever knew you could get them loose though, so might look into that. Although, I do need a visit home to see my friends so might have to do some hamster shopping too!

My Syrian loves mealworms. I get the freeze dried ones for birds from Poundland/home bargains they're exactly the same, but a hell of a lot cheaper. If sweep doesn't like them you can always put them out for the birds and it's better to waste a £1 than £3.75

I buy dried bird mealworms from my local Pets at Home. My Syrian seemed unsure about them to start with but within a few days they were his new favourite. I usually give him a small handful of mealworms with every refill of his bowl, so around 13. I'm not sure about the smallest pack you can get, but I'm sure there are some little boxes of dried mealworms out there somewhere. The first pack I bought lasted me almost a year and I'm on my second one now. Good luck!

How often do you refill his bowl? 13 is a lot of mealworms even for a syrian!
2 or 3 a day is probably plenty.

My Syrian doesn't like them, he used to have a little nibble occasionally but now he won't even entertain the idea! When he was eating them, I'd give him 2-3 week and even they wouldn't always all get eaten.

He much prefers a little piece of cooked chicken or a meaty dog treat for a little animal protein boost.

Buzz empties his bowl usually every 4-5 days. I refill it then. The mealworms tend to disappear with a few taken every day so I don't think he's overdosing on them.

If he doesn't like them you can use in treats! That's what I do for my Syrian boy who won't eat them unless I give him some in my 'special' treats
I use 5 mealworms crushed. A bit of porrige/rice mix and some water. Sometimes a few small seeds to. I use enough water to make a dough and leave in the fridge for a few hours. Percys loves it.

It really depends on the hammy. If you do wind up with mealies and your Sweep decides he doesn't like them, no sweat! Birds LOVE them. After Almond passed away and I still had about a 2/3 of a big bag of them I fed them to the birds in the yard. Happy, happy birds. so, it can't hurt to try them on Sweep.
