There are multiple kinds of sunflower seeds, and usually you find the most variety of them in bird feed. I've seen the solid black (oil) seeds in some hamster mixes along with the white striped seeds.

I'm curious if thistle seed or red millet is ok too, because they have some on sale at the local hardware store.

Not sure on thistle but red millet is fine as long as it is just plain millet with nothing added in!

Yes Millet sounds good - thistle sounds a bit prickly lol. Actually does anyone know what Apple Cracker Dari is? Or Dari? I have one and not really sure what it is.

Not entirely sure, but this is a link for what Rosewood have to say about the ingredient:
Apple Cracker Dari :: Rosewood Pet

It's supposed to be a better alternative to using "cheap starch rich cereals",but it is near impossible to find out what it actually is

Oddy do you know which thistle seed? Most are ok for hams, I give mine milk thistle from time to time in small amounts & another I can't remember the name of right now!
Red millet is fine, there are a lot of different millet varieties & they're all good.

All the various sunflower seeds are ok, I use the black ones for my dwarfs as they're smaller so they have to work just as hard but don't get too much of a fatty treat!
Pumpkin seeds in the shell are good too.

All nuts & sunflower or pumpkin seeds are high in fat so should only be given in small amounts.
Walnuts, hazelnuts, brazil nuts & almonds are all fine but almonds should never be given in the shell, monkey nuts are a great treat too of course.

In case there are any confused US hamster owners wondering just what a monkey nut is,it's essentially a peanut.

Very good to remember that since sunflower seeds are in most mixes it might be best to avoid them as a treat, but they're extremely beneficial to hamsters so they shouldn't be entirely eliminated from the diet.

Monkey nuts are peanuts in the shell, don't know if you have another name for them? but basically yes but better to give them that way as they enjoy digging the nut out & the treat lasts way longer!

If you do have sunflower seeds in their mix it's quite nice to take a few out & use them as treats for hand feeding, that way you can avoid overdoing the fatty treats

We're boring in the US we just call them peanuts in the shell I believe.Definitely good to have even more stimulation with every treat though!

Hand feeding parts of a mix honestly might be a really good idea to help with taming and it could also mean less fatty treats too!

It is quite common practise, I do it with all mine so they don't get that may extras & it really is helpful when you want to give more "treats" to get them used to scary big hands!
