Exclamation Vegtables and Salmon

Hello all,

What vegetables or fruit can I place in a Campbells Russian Dwarf Hamsters food mix without her having too much sugar?

Also is salmon ok to give to a Roborovski Dwarf Hamster for an Omega 3 supplement (she is 1 year 8 months and 8 days old) (Meeko)

Thank you

Fish isn't a natural food for them so only ok in very small amounts & not very often. You'd probably do better to give a few flax seeds now & then.
This is my veg list, I would avoid fruit with a Campbells, they don't need it if they have veg & all fruit contains sugars.

Safe veg, those marked * are relatively high in sugar so only feed to diabetes prone species as an occasional treat if at all.
Asparagus (mine have never liked this)
Basil
Broccoli
Brussels sprouts
Common or red clover
Cabbage, green or red
Carrot*
Cauliflower
Celery
Chard
Coriander
Courgette
Cress (not mustard & cress as commonly sold together)
Cucumber
Dandelion leaves & flowers
Endive/chicory
Green beans/runner beans
Kale
Pak choi/Bok choi
Parsley
Peas/mange tout/sugar snap/snow*
Peppers, any colour
Potato/sweet potato cooked only*
Radicchio
Spinach
Squash/pumpkin*
Swede
Sweet corn/baby corn*
Turnip

I give Twinkle a small piece of cod every so often. I wouldn't give salmon though.

As someone with experience with diabetic nutrition at least in humans,I do know that some fruit is actually very beneficial in moderation. There is absolutely no reason to completely eliminate fruit,as it does make for a very good treat if and only if fed in moderation.Small bits of fruit are completely harmless and the tiny amount of sugar is not as harmful as that in for example a yogurt drop.Besides, natural sugars and artificial sugars when considering nutritional requirements are entirely different and one is actually fine for diabetic people and hamsters to have as long as it is in moderation.

Someone on here (was it C Palmer?) once gave their hammy a bit of fish and the stink was terrible the next day lol! And then she had to find the bit of fish to remove it ha ha. I don't think I'd give Salmon or any fresh fish. Rosewood sell shrimp cookies They're ok - I don't know if dried shrimp has the same kind of omega 3 as fresh fish - I shouldn't think so.

As Cypher said, there are other sources of healthy oils.

I replied to the same comments in your other thread so I think we may have to agree to differ regarding fruit, not an absolute no no, mine do get a blueberry (or usually half) & very occasionally a tiny tiny piece of apple but that wouldn't be more than once a week at most for a diabetes prone ham.
Do remember that even though you may have experience with diabetes in humans (which is useful) a hamsters natural diet is very different to ours as is their digestive system so things aren't the same by any means.

Ok, thank you all, I won't feed fish to Meeko but will try flaxseeds and will find a vegetable that Nutmeg likes.

Just remember that no doesn't always mean no forever!Try different things and offer them again later on if they're refused.
