It's not 'scientific' but it suits my lot. I vary the proportions of additions depending on time of year and the hams' condition. I also found that feeding a good amount only a couple of times a week reduced pickiness no end (for adult hams not in need of chubbying up - not for babies or poorly hams).
I recommend new pet owners of my hams feed a good quality commercial mix rather than trying to replicate my mix.
James seemed to like the food that you gave me when I picked him up and he'd eat all of it. He's got Harry Hamster at the moment as my other Chineseys had really gone off of Burgess but I notice he's leaving a few of the bigger bits and refusing to eat them.

I don't know whether it's worth trying him with a dwarf mix, just breaking up the bigger bits in the hope that he might eat them or trying to make my own mix?

Now I've found a site that ships to the uk (thanks Ruby!) I might have a go at making my own mix, it will probably take me forever & a day to work it out as to really get it right I will need to figure out all the nutrients in each individual component, the sort of thing that I really enjoy although it may well drive me up the wall too lol!
Knowing there are some things none of my hams seem to like at all like canary seed & a lot of the grass seeds if I can come up with other ingredients that match nutritionally I may eventually end up with a mix that gets eaten completely.
I love the mixer on Mixerama that lets you add different things in precise grams so you can get the percentages right, it's fun to play with but that's as far as I've got right now lol!
I'm interested in all the pellets they do too, I want to know if hams just don't like pellets or if they might enjoy something that's not just grass or alfalfa?!
In no way am I going to switch my hams to a completely new untested food mic it's going to be more of a small experiment to see how practical it would be to create a healthy mix from scratch. If I come up with something I'm happy with I'd probably use it as a "treat mix" to begin with & see how they like it as their treats are mostly just seeds & normal food stuff already.
If it works all well & good, if not I'll probably have had some fun anyway

It does sound a lot of fun trying out various food ingredients like that! For me though I'm too paranoid about messing up a mix if I make it myself - just don't feel I know enough personally about hamster nutrition for it to be a good idea. Maybe in another few years I'll look at it again . I was eyeing a pre-made mix they have on Mixerama for Syrians though : Nessa Goldsmith & TeddyHamster Mix. Anyone else think it looks pretty good? (I did spot the chickpeas in it )

There is the one called Fairytale Means Hamster Extra (can't seem to get the specific page to link). Interestingly enough they have a version without animal protien. Anyone know why? I know you can get protein from other sources but is there a reason why people prefer mixes without animal protein specifically? (aside from being vegetarian I mean)

They seem to have quite a lot of different variations on mixes on that site. They also sell some base mixes which I am assuming are mostly good on their own but are meant to have stuff added too as you prefer - that may be a good option for those just starting to make their own mixes rather than doing it completely from scratch.

Nope. Only came across the site a few days ago. There is something to be said for being sick in bed with nothing much to do except surf the internet

This is the direct link to the fairytale mix just to save anyone an extra click lol!
It does look quite good that one, not that I'm an expert on food for syrians, the other one you linked to does seem to have rather a lot of bean type ingredients with the chickpeas & lentils & mungbeans, sounds a bit much to me.
I have no idea why people would be wanting non animal protein specifically tbh.
I hadn't really looked at syrian mixes, just about everything else but lol! I do like a couple of the dwarf pre made mixes there.
The base mixes would be a good starting point for a lot of people, way easier than starting from scratch!

ETA just having another look & I think the idea of no animal protein is just so you can choose your own to add.

I think you may be right about it being for people who want to add in their own protein . Makes sense I suppose if you have a fussy ham. Spike hates mealworms and crickets so if I'm giving him a mix with the protein percentage based off him actually eating them then I know the actual protein he's getting is much lower so I have to compensate. But if you know your ham likes something specific protein wise you can add that in instead and not unbalance the mix .

That Fairytale mix with protein looks good with regards to percentages of stuff ( I think). I do like the look of the Nessa Goldsmith & TeddyHamster Mix one too, but for some reason it's not giving the percentages which you think it would. I may see if I can find some reviews online.

I have the same problem with Mickle, loves shrimps but hates mealworms!

I was a bit surprised that the dwarf mixes don't have a G/A & only some of the syrian mixes seem to, but there is a little thing under the bit where you select the amount to buy where you can ask a question.
I emailed them about something & got an answer pretty quick.
It may be that they don't have an exact G/A for every mix? I really don't know how they work it out as there are some ingredients I can't find any nutritional info on anywhere but it must be out there somewhere or the commercial mixes wouldn't have a G/A either, I still have lots of googling to do I think

Maybe have two seperate tabs or windows. Have one in the translated English and the other in the orginal German then check out using the original German site just switching back to the English translation to see what the text means. You may have to use google translate on each page in a seperate window as you go along. Hope that made sense
