Trill budgie seed?
I have found a recipe for hamster food and each recipe is species specific, the main ingredient for the mix is budgie seed, is trill budgie seed safe for hamsters?

Re: Trill budgie seed?
Budgie seed is ok to use as a treat but I wouldn't use it as a main food, the seeds are safe but like most bird foods it does contain oyster shell grit & I really don't know if that's a good or bad thing for hams.

Re: Trill budgie seed?
Yeah the grit added to bird seed Is to help it get broken down in the bird's crop... This is a hard little bag in their throats that grinds everything up. It really is made of tough stuff so shell doesn't hurt it but hams have nothing like this so I wouldn't think it was suitable

Re: Trill budgie seed?
My budgie had trill for awhile and it didn't have oyster shell in it. It was just plain budgie seed.
I wouldn't give oyster shell/grit to a hamster as they don't need it and it could damage their pouches etc as it is sharp.
Plain bird seed would be ok but just a little. Main diet is a hamster mix.

Re: Trill budgie seed?
It does have grit CMB, easy to miss on the ingredient list but it's there.
The other problem is the added vitamins, bird nutritional needs are doubtless different from hams so that could lead to problems.
Ingredients
A mix of five or more of the following seeds and whole grains: White French Millet, Panorama Millet, Panicum, Sorghum, Canola Seed, Canary Seed, Dehulled Oats, Japanese Millet, Shirohie Millet, Wheat, Red Millet, Linseed; Shell Grit; NUTRIVIT™ (containing ground cereals and essential vitamins and minerals, including Calcium, Vit E, Vit C, Panthothenic acid, Niacin, Vit A, Iodine, Vit B6, Vit B2, Vit B12, Vit D3, Vit B1, & Folic acid); Vegetable Oil.

Re: Trill budgie seed?
Maybe it has grit now, but it didn't when I used it. The box even had a notes on feeding and suggested buying grit, giving fruit and veg as well as suggested treat sticks.

Re: Trill budgie seed?
All the budgie foods I saw in pet shops had grit or oyster shell in them, I remember asking about them on here and being told to avoid.
I got a bag of plain canary seed from Rat Rations, it was really cheap and has lasted for ages. Joey loves it.

Re: Trill budgie seed?
I prefer to get a variety of different seeds separately too, mostly from Ratrations, & mix them up myself rather than bags of bird food.

Re: Trill budgie seed?
My budgie used to have Trill, but then quiet a few years ago he wouldn't eat it, so he now has p@h budgie seed. I think he stopped eating it when they changed the recipe and added the grit/oyster shell.
You can buy budgie seed loose without grit/oyster shell added and the p@h budgie seed does not have anything in it but various types of seed.
