Accidental Chickpea & Sauce consumption!
Spike went and ate a chickpea off the floor earlier I can't sleep for worrying so I thought I'd post on the forum, even just for reassurance . It's completely my fault. I had dinner in bed because I've been ill and a chickpea must have fallen off my plate onto the floor without my noticing. The chickpea was from a can and was in a sauce made up of tomatoes, onion, pork and garlic (Hubby made the sauce). I'm not sure if I'm more worried about the chickpea or the sauce but Hubby (who had Spike out) said that he ate half the chickpea and it didn't seem like it had sauce on it as it was fairly dry. I've tried online but can't seem to find a definitive answer about chickpeas and if they're okay - I am assuming so because they are a legume and so are peanuts and he likes those just fine! Spike seemed fine when he was put back, although he did seem to drink more water than usual - which is worrying me but I'm hoping it was maybe just because it was probably a little salty since it was canned?
If he did get any sauce it should hopefully just be a very very tiny amount. What I'm really looking for is an an idea how on bad it could be if he did get some of all that in his system. Are we talking upset tummy or really bad?

Re: Accidental Chickpea & Sauce consumption!
Ruby, I accendentally on purpose gave a grape to my WW that was 3 days before giving birth. A small bit unless it is something super toxic will have a small effect if any. You may notice he sleeps a little more but you are not the worst hamster owner in existence. Just make sure he doesn't develop a taste for chickpea. I would reccomend Vacuuming before letting the little fluff monster out for some destruction time.

Re: Accidental Chickpea & Sauce consumption!
A chickpea won't hurt him Ruby, if he ddi get just a teeny bit of sauce I dubt it would be eough to cause a problem either.

Re: Accidental Chickpea & Sauce consumption!
Thanks guys!
Phew - glad at least the chickpea should at least be okay! I know I'm over worrying again but it just freaked me out. I was worried about rushing him to the vet with a really bad stomach or something awful like that. I'm so careful to check everything I give him food wise. As long as such a tiny amount of sauce, if any, won't do him any harm that's not too bad then thank heavens!
Hubby has promised a full vacuum before Spike gets out for playtime again. I'm still so upset with myself right now. It's one of those risks of free ranging that I'm always usually so aware of, it's why neither of us eat in the room .

Re: Accidental Chickpea & Sauce consumption!
I'm sure he'll be fine - he was probably just trying it out. They're not recommended but he won't have eaten much as you say. Sorry you're not well - I know how tedious it is eating in bed when you're stuck there! Stuff goes everywhere. Charlie was chewing madly away at the floor cushion the other day and when I looked there was a bit of squashed banana on it urgh! If we were able to do free-ranging here with a child around I'd be having to hoover twice a day lol! Try not to worry - if he seems fine then he probably is.

Re: Accidental Chickpea & Sauce consumption!
He seems perfectly fine thankfully! I actually do find that I run the vacuum cleaner around the room every second day, not just to make sure there is nothing risky on the floor but also because His Royal Fluffiness makes such a mess! Unfortunately vacuuming has been low priority since I've been ill although Hubby is going to vacuum tonight after work. Right now there is a lovely pile of sand in one corner and lots of tiny pieces of trashy paperback novel here and there
Hubby said he seemed to really like the chickpea, there was apparently much excitement at the treasure he found - he even bruxed at Hubby when it was removed from his clutches. I seemed to find a lot of conflicting information on the internet though. Does anyone know for certain if chickpeas (not sprouted, or canned ones etc but regular ones) are okay for hamsters or not?

Re: Accidental Chickpea & Sauce consumption!
Oh thanks for that Serendipity! That gave me a good laugh I may just be able to persuade Hubby to buy me a robot vacuum if I can get one that looks like the Millennium Falcon!!

Re: Accidental Chickpea & Sauce consumption!
Once I made a spicy bean chilli and thought I'd dropped a bit on the floor when eating but couldn't find it anywhere. Nelly comes out for a run round the next day, obviously finds the bean and ate it, really enjoying it! I was worried because it was really hot and spicy and I thought it would be horrible for her but she loved it! I think a one of bit of sauce isn't going to do any harm at all

Re: Accidental Chickpea & Sauce consumption!
Glad to hear I'm not the only one this has happened to, I do feel a bit silly about the whole thing overall! It's difficult to judge though when something is said to be unsafe because it could mean it's just not a good idea to give for various reasons or that it's actually something that will make your hammy very very sick.
