Yeah that one. I don't like it and the hamsters don't seem that intrested!
How much protein should they be getting? I never look at all that stuff

Just wanted to add to this thread about Nature's Touch for hamsters. I was following advice from here to mix foods so that a ham does not get bored. I use HH as the base and when I could not find any Burgess for a Syrian at P@H, I bought NT. It smells very different and looks strange. However I added a couple of pinches each time and it seemed to go. There are larger pieces in it I use as treats by tearing them up to smaller bits and put them in the sputniks so he goes a-hunting in the night. I did not intend getting it again but found that it did get eaten so I have just bought another bag to mix in again-and it is still eaten!

It's good to know the basics at least so you can tell if any food you buy is suitable or not, ideally protein should be around 19%, not many mixes are actually that high so they do need a bit of supplementing, fat should be somewhere around 7% not more really & fibre 8% or even higher, no one mix is perfect but that should give you an idea of what to aim for.

Harry Hamster used to be pretty perfect on the amounts when protein was at 18% but it's a bit low in protein since they changed it to 16%. They need the higher protein levels in the first year and after that it's less important and 16% is ok then apparently. So supplementing the protein is the main thing (meat, cheese, eggs and nuts are all protein foods). And the veg - just because fresh veg is healthy And they love it.

Thanks for that Coco - I just googled it. I wasn't too interested in it until I looked at the manufacturers website, where it says all the ingredients have been grown in their own fields without fertilizers or insecticides and dehydrated ingredients are done naturally without preservatives. So it sounds virtually organic which is nice!

I don't think Charlie would like having hay and wheat ears in his food bowl, but it would be nice as a supplement food to scatter I still think I'd freeze anything that had hay in first. I'm paranoid about hay lol. Probably not necessary though

Natures Touch, Pet Food, Complete Food

Incidentally they seem to be a Spanish company - I emailed them to ask them to politely request they change something on their hamster info page (about 60cm being a good size for a hamster cage lol) and the response to the sent message was in Spanish.

Anyway not that it matters, but I know Spain are very good on organic and herbal things and their pharmacies sell homeopathic and herbal medicines alongside conventional ones.

That is very good to know Serendipity. I don't used the bits of hay at all because Mocho ignores them. As for the wheat ears I put about half of one in a Sputnik and he eats it there so I have to clean out the debris left on the mat! The dried slices are usually too large so I tear them into smaller pieces ( giving them as occasional treat) and they always disappear in the night.

Another thing I have just bought for treats is by Tiny Friends Farm -Harry Hamster Yippees. Small bar shapes in 3flavours, Apple, sweet corn and carrot. Going down well so far.

Actually, I'm not so sure about bran - it's high on the ingredient list. It used to be recommended for humans for roughage and then not recommended on its own as it could cause gut problems and 'wholefood' was recommended instead (ie the grains with the bran in, not the bran on its own). But if Hamsters have been having it with no problems it must be ok.

I also came across this thread from last year where some hamsters and degus had had reactions to something in it - but it seems the formula is different now, and a hamster could be allergic to anything really. Degus have more particular dietary needs so that's not particularly relevant to hamsters, and the hamster that had the allergic reaction may have reacted to one of the ingredients in the older formula.

Allergic reaction? | Degu and Chinchilla World

You can buy wheat ears separately. I did try this once and Charlie ignored them lol. He ignores millet too.

Just as well I only put a couple of pinches in the mix. That does not seem to have caused any problems. I have also mixed the zooplus JR farm in there as well. He does not eat all of it though.

I agree I think it's more of a supplementary food. And it also sounds like the formula has improved since that forum post I linked. Just didn't fancy neat bran really. Apparently even All Bran isn't good for us any more lol. Shredded wheat supposed to be better as it has the whole grain.
