Best food?
Hello. Well I am brand new to Hamsters. So can anyone tell me what is the absolute best and healthiest food sold? I don't care for the price. I own birds and buy the best quality food for them. And I want the same for my little girl. So what do you guys think is the absolute best food in the market. And what vegetables are best for them? Thank you.

Re: Best food?
What country are you in & what species are you feeding?
There's plenty of good food available in the UK but it can be harder to find in the US.
There are lots of veg they can have, too many to list really but favourites are things like broccoli, cabbage, kale, cauliflower, romaine lettuce, sugar snap peas or mange tout, bell peppers, carrots, pumpkin or butternut squash, potato or sweet potato must be cooked but are often enjoyed & cucumber to name a few, nothing from the onion family & no garlic, no iceberg lettuce.
Always begin feeding veg in very small amounts & experiment with different things to see what your ham enjoys.

Re: Best food?
Finding good food for dwarf hams in the US isn't easy I know, a lot of people have a bit of a problem & I'm not really up to speed with what is or isn't available there, I keep forgetting sorry!
Your ham will be a hybrid Russian as she's come from a pet store, this means she does have the potential to develop diabetes so you do need to take extra care to avoid sugars, actual sugar or natural sugars, in her diet so no fruit, very little if any of the sweeter veg like carrot, potato or squash.
Dwarf hams do tend to enjoy a mix with small seeds but you could use oxbow as a part of her diet, although a bit low in protein as most mixes/pellets are it is otherwise a good food, if you can hunt out a good mix to go with it she should do well with that.
Avoid any treats with sugar, honey or fruit & stick to natural foods like millet, sunflower, pumpkin & other seeds, mealworms for treats. Monkey nuts & very small pieces of other nuts once in a while are fine & tiny pieces of chicken once or twice a week give a good protein boost too.
Hope that helps a bit.

Re: Best food?
Yes I have been giving her millet as a treat. I am also feeding her pellets I bought from the store. So a seed mix would be better? I feed my birds very high quality seed food. Could she eat the same food?

Re: Best food?
No you can't feed bird food, while some of the seeds in bird foods are fine not everything always is & you need something with the right balance of protein, fat & fibre so stick to foods made for hams.

Re: Best food?
The best hamster food in the US is Pet Co Mazuri Rat & Mouse lab blocks mixed with Higgins Sunburst seed mix.
If you have access only to Pet Smart the best food there would be Kaytee forti lab blocks mixed with VitaKraft Vita Smart seed mix, some people also like VitaKraft Vita Nature

Re: Best food?
I have petco and pet smart here. But I usually buy all my stuff from Amazon. I'll look into that food.
