Default Walnut in the shell

Is this ok to feed with the shell still on? I'm guessing I would need to break the shell a bit. Most amusing just now as Nibble got hold of one and carries it round the room squeaking trying to take it to his nest!

I am sure I have seen it suggested on here as a good idea.

Yes I give mine nuts in the shell, just crack them a little and they do the rest. Pickle spent about 10 minutes figuring out how to get it through the tubes to his store, most amusing!

I have always given my hams and gerbils walnuts in the shell. I usually crack them in half so the poor fluff doesn't have to struggle with it. I also buy the shelled walnuts to give them as treats. They also enjoy slivered almonds...they are the perfect size for little hammy paws, peanuts...loose, and in the shell...sunflower seeds, and shelled pumpkin seeds. I use the different nuts and seeds on different days for variety.

A walnut shell may prove too hard unless cracked with nut cracker or hammer first to allow the nut inside to be exposed. I would worry about my hamsters teeth being broken if the shell was too hard. They are not squirrels! x

Thanks - I'll break the shell open a bit for them. Nibble couldn't get into the shell despite his best efforts so they deffo need a bit of help.
