Can hamsters taste sweet?
Greetings,
I'm wondering if hamsters are able to taste sweet things or not?
And are they able to taste spicy foods(i know its not good to give them, just wondering). In short, can someone explain to me about their taste bud, what they can taste because cats cannot taste sweet things, so I'm wondering about hamsters.
Thank you in advance.

Re: Can hamsters taste sweet?
I'm not sure about sweet and sour, but seeing as they tend to like stuff like drops that usually have a lot of sugar in them I would expect them to be able to.
Since 'spicy' isn't a taste they would definitely be able to taste that. 'Spicy' or 'hot' foods have an irritant in them that bothers our tastebuds. I have no clue how to explain that better lol

Re: Can hamsters taste sweet?
I don't know about the sweet, but Nelly accidentally at something spicy one and wasn't bothered at all. Either that or she liked it!
I had made a spicy bean chilli and when I was eating I felt a bean drop from the fork onto the floor. I couldn't find it to clear it up, and when I let Nelly out for her evening run I was worried she would eat it. Anyway, she found it and she sat there and gobbled it down like a favourite treat before I could get it off her! Normally she ignores food if I give it to her when she is running around so she must have liked it!

I don't know if it is taste or smell. But they definitely seem to go for sweet things. I think it might be smell as they have such a strong sense of smell.

Re: Can hamsters taste sweet?
Given sour fruit is unripe (is it? I'm not a fruit person!) I wonder if they can taste the difference in order to not get an upset tum. Or can you smell 'sour'?

Re: Can hamsters taste sweet?
Sour fruit & unripe fruit aren't necessarily the same thing but I did give mine a blueberry from the garden which wasn't very sweet (although ripe) as we've had hardly any sunshine & they weren't nearly as keen as normal!

Re: Can hamsters taste sweet?
Oh yes of course I forgot there are many sour fruits - none of which are generally on my menu!
