Best treats for taming?
What are the best treats to give a Syrian hamster during the taming process?

Re: Best treats for taming?
I gave mine various treats, a different treat each day.
Yoghurst drops - I would break mine into 2 bits, chicken - little bits, grated carrot, little pieces of strawberry.

Re: Best treats for taming?
If you need a high volume of treats you can pick out the nicer seeds from their food mix, like the sunflower seeds, and use those. Cc likes cooked rice so I use maybe 8-10 little grains of rice or split up a small floret for brocolli up into more pieces. Basically what you'd maybe give them as dinner later but spaced out a bit!
Peanuts, yogurt drops or little bits of fruit are high value treats so you shouldn't use them for taming when you want LOTS of treats to give them, but use them at the end as a big "Good Job" treat when you're finished for the day.

Re: Best treats for taming?
I used to use Rotostak chocolate drops when we were taming Charlie (he wouldn't touch yoghurt drops!) - which aren't real chocolate because real chocolate is poisonous to hamsters. He went potty for them. I weaned off those though when I realised how sugary they are! As Shannon says other treats are sunflower seeds, a small piece of fruit like apple or banana (Really small piece, like 1cm cube size) or a monkey nut. I found the choc drops good while we were taming though as you need a few treats sometimes in one go and they were small and always taken!

Re: Best treats for taming?
Somebody on the forums linked me to these treats.
They're little heart shaped treats, there green, red and a yellow. I'm not sure if these signify flavours or not, but Zak seems to like them and I'm pretty sure they're either sugar free or have very little in.
I use them when I'm trying to tame Zak, I haven't got far with it but I'm going super slow and trying new things introduced to me by fellow forum users, but I will keep using these because Zak does respond when these are about too!

Think that was me Yes we used those for taming later on! When we decided the choc drops were bad for him - thanks for reminding me! Charlie loved those, especially the pink ones which are beetroot I think.

It was you! I thought it might have been! I didn't want to name anyone in case I got it wrong. Eternally grateful for the heads up on these, they've been amazing, I actually ordered 4 more bags when I realised how well Zak was getting on with them so I have a hearty supply!

Re: Best treats for taming?
Although I've only got a Chinese hamster, I've found that sunflower hearts work really well with May as she doesn't seem to like yoghurt drops very much.
They're cheap enough to buy on their own or you could pick them out of their food mix.
