Default Budgie seed

I was in Pets At Home this afternoon and was going to get some budgie seed to mix in with my hamster food as I have read on here that the small seeds and millet etc are really popular with Robo hamsters in particular.

I looked at Trill, PAH own make and a Vitakraft one. They all had shell grit in and the Vitakraft food had eucalyptus oil in too.

What brand of budgie seed is safe for hamsters? I wasn't sure if they were allowed the grit or the eucalyptus oil so didn't buy any.

I buy budgie seed from Wilkinson's, their own brand - and there is no grit in that - oh dear I'm worried my budgie is missing out now!

I avoid budgie mixes as I'm not at all sure if oyster shell grit is harmful or not & I would definitely avoid anything with something like eucalyptus in.
It's better imo to buy small seeds individually & mix them, I usually buy mine from ratrations as they do most seeds in small amounts & have a good range so you can get a good mix .

When I buy millet seeds I usually just buy a pre-weighed bag of budgie or Canary seed mix from my local pet shop (non animal) and there is no grit or anything else added. Budgie tonic mix has something added for budgies that old or ill, but without looking it up, I`m not sure what! So look for plain millet seeds. My pet shop has 1kg bags for £1.10p.

Or if your not sure, you could just buy a bag of Burgess Supahamster Dwarf food as this already has lots of millet in it. x

Budgie tonic seed doesn't have anything added it's just an extra rich seed mix to give them a boost, usually contains aniseed which as far as I know is ok, this is a typical mix for budgie tonic seed although they can vary a bit "Naked Oats, White, Red & Panicum Milletseed, Canary Seed, Pinhead Oatmeal, Niger Seed, Black Rapeseed, Linseed, Mawseed (poppy), Hempseed, Aniseed Flavour"

You could always get the millet sprays. So you know it is only millet, and if you hang them from the roof of their cage they get the enrichment of climbing to strip them.

Ah yes, it was that `aniseed` smell I never liked about the budgie tonic seed for hamsters as I felt it was a little too aromatic. The mixed budgie seed has the various coloured seeds, red, white panicum and a few others. x

Thanks guys. I do buy millet sprays which he absolutely loves but was sure I had read on here that budgie mixes with various seeds were safe and popular with hams, but I think it's best if I avoid and just stick to millet sprays, and I'll get him some sesame seeds too.
