Default nut free food

Hi I've been looking into getting a Syrian hamster for my daughter. However my son is peanut and tree nut allergic. So I've been hunting for nut free hamster food. I found hamster nuggets at pets at home. It's a complete food So should be okay. My question is if my hamster isn't getting nuts is she gonna be missing some essential dietary requirements?

Hi and welcome. Nut allergies can be tricky and checking with Pets At Home regarding the ingredients within these nuggets and the factory where the food is prepared would be the best idea, although they are not great for hamsters to live on permanently in my view as hamsters do prefer a varied diet through their lives.

Most commercial hamster foods do contain peanuts and although these can be picked out, the hamster does benefit from the nutrition nuts give. So the fact that peanuts are even in the mix, your son could still be exposed to the nuts unless it only affects him if he actually eats them?

I had to adopt a Syrian hamster from my nephew a few years ago as his young son became allergic to the hamster himself, so if you are sure you could keep a hamster knowing the animal itself would`nt cause your son any health issues, then I`m sure a diet could be tailored to the hamsters needs without depriving it of nutritional content. x

Welcome to the forum
This has come up a few times before & it can be tricky, a hamster wouldn't really miss out too much if you didn't feed nuts but they do need a good mix of various seeds if not nuts & the complete nuggets are Ok but not really as their sole food, they need variety.
It also depends just how allergic your son is, just about all hamster food will be packed or mixed in an environment where there will most likely be nuts & some possible cross contamination from nuts, I can't see any ingredients listed for those nuggets on the P@H website so I have no idea what's in them or whether the protein, fat, fibre content would be suitable or not.

I think all hamster foods I have come across have peanuts in unfortunately. I'm not a fan of the nuggets, I wouldn't want to deprive my hamster of a varied diet and being able to pick out what they enjoy; nuts and seeds are always a favourite in my experience.

How severe are your sons allergic reactions? I have many allergies including peanuts and peas, though fortunately do not experience anaphylaxis from breathing in or touching trace amounts. I find I am fine using a spoon to put the feed in the cage and make sure to wash my hands after and not touch my face, especially eyes or lips, Not a nice mistake to make!

Thank you all for replying! My son isn't airborne allergic as far as we know. And he wouldn't be handling the food. I'm just not comfortable having nuts in the house at all. I was thinking I could still give the hamster other seeds that you can buy online that are processed in a t nut free setting.

You could look at the peanut nutritionally and try to find an alternative to them that you could buy in a supermarket, like pumpkin seeds for example, although I havn`t looked at the comparisons between the two myself. Peanuts are added as a fat source, but it`s not animal fat. They contain oils. x
