Question Fresh Food Portion Sizes?

Hello everyone!

I am currently looking into adopting a Syrian hamster. It has been a while since I've owned a hamster and I am curious to know what their intake of food should be (fruits, vegetables, nuts, etc.) and what would be a good feeding schedule for such foods including portion sizes. I would really appreciate some help regarding this topic, and I apologize if I am creating a thread that has already been discussed in the past. (:

the amount and frequency also depends on what type of food and how your hamster reacts to it. some hamsters stomachs are more sensitive than others when it comes to fresh food. i generally give my current syrian a small piece of fruit or vegetable about 4 times a week, and a nut or something like dry oats on the other days. my previous syrian absolutely loved vegetables and had no problem having a bit everyday, so i'd often give her both a nut/oats and a piece of vegetable.

my current hamster's favorite vegetable is broccoli - i'll give her a small floret and she'll eat the whole thing right away. if i give her a baby carrot she'll eat half of it and hoard the rest, and then she usually forgets about it so i take out whatever's left the next day. she usually hoards the nuts as well, but i leave those.

here's a list of other vegetables and fruits i give her so that you can get a sense of amounts:

teaspoon of peas
small slice of bell pepper
green been
2-3 leaves of baby spinach or kale
slice of cucumber (especially when it's hot out)
slice of banana
whole berry or grape (2 or 3 berries if they're small, like blueberries)
small piece of apple

in general, start off slow so you can see how your hamster reacts to different foods. you should check out the wiki section (link is on the left of the page under "navigation") for more ideas!

Hi! I personally give my hamster a dime sized pieces of vegetables 2 times a week, Wednesday and Saturday. You can give more than that if you you want. Also make sure to introduce the veggies slowly if they never had it before. Hope this helped! XXX
