Default Vitasmart

Hi, I recently got a winter white russian dwarf hamster and bought Vitasmart food for him. After some research I found they were able to get diabetes and Vitasmart has sugary foods inside. I am not able to return the product as I have already opened it. Is it possible to just take out the sugary food and if it is, can someone name the food i should pick out and if I should, should I add some stuff to have more nutritional content?

If you are going to get a Syrian hamster or a roborovski hamster ( or robo for short ) you shouldn't worry as they are not prone to diabeteis how ever, in extremely rare cases they can get it, it is usually caused by their genetics but it is so rare there is no need to take precaution. How ever it doesn't mean that you should feed a very big amount of sugar but for them the food is fine.

However for diabetes prone hamsters it contains : flaked corn, ground corn, flaked peas, corn gluten meal which you can possibly take out but I'm not sure if you can take out the apple juice concentrate.
Hope this helped! XXX
PS. The food I mostly reccomend is burggess supa hamster harvest ( not the dwarth one ) and hazel/harry hamster!

Unfortunately you can't take out the main sugary ingredients which are the molasses & apple juice concentrate, corn & peas are fine as part of a balanced mix though. It won't hurt to feed it for a short while but you would be better off replacing it with something more suited to diabetes prone dwarfs.
The protein is a bit low so while you are feeding it you could give a freeze dried mealworm or two a day & a few sunflower or pumpkin seeds (in the shell) now & then.
Maybe once or twice a week a tiny piece of chicken or cheese is quite good as a protein boost for a young growing ham too.
