Default New hamster questions

Hi. I am a new hamster mommy of, Gaia, a long haired Syrian who is 10 weeks old. I have had her about 4-5 days. She is doing great for a new hamster except that I haven't seen her drink. Her bottle is full. She eats like a pig, and runs on her flying saucer all night long and tonight is the first time Ive seen her really get into her toys and tunnels but no drinking. Is this normal Also should I be taking up her food bowl at some point or leave it out all the time?

Thanks,

I have a small bowl of water and a bottle for my new hammy while I suss her out. Like you, I never saw her drink from the bottle.
I leave her food bowl out all the time. I work on the premise that she will take the food in the bowl and what I scatter in the cage when she wants it. (When I first got her she would think nothing of storing all her food straight away and so her bowl was empty most of the time!).
I'm new to hams myself, so it would be good to see what other people say.

Hi Sarah and Welcome to HC.
Leave the food bowl in the cage. Have you marked the bottle? Most water bottles have amounts up the side if the bottle, fill up to a set mark and see from that if it goes down. You could put a piece of cucumber in her cage as this is juicy.

thank mates. She is FINALLY drinking you were right. I took her to the vet for a new hammy check up and bc she was sneezing a lot and he said that she had a bit of an upper resperatory infection (white nasal discharge). So he put her on Batryl and a probiotic. I'm so glad I took her! Ive noticed that she is not eating as much since Ive been giving her antibiotics. Is this normal? She is drinking great now though. Me giving her her antibiotics has really helped tame her a good bit. This morning she licked the probiotic off of my finger. So cute

Antibiotics can be quite rough on their stomachs, I would suggest giving her baby food everyday, a teaspoon sized portion. When my oldest was on antibiotics I gave him Cow N Gate's cauliflower cheese, rice pudding, creamy porridge, egg custard and brocolli with cauliflower cheese.
You need to throw it out after it's been opened for 48 hours but, you can fill an ice cube tray and freeze it.
Gaia will enjoy these foods. Also chicken breast is good too.
Hope Gaia's feeling better soon xx
