Default Please help! I didnt know about almonds

Hello

We have a hamster for about 2 months now. I have given him an almond from time to time. I didn't know we were not supposed to give him almonds. He seems OK but shall I be worried, shall I take him to the vet? We are beginners but we love him very much...I am worried.

Thanks for advice
Viviana

Hi Vipin and welcome to the forum Congratulations on you hamster - they do make excellent companions .

They are safe as long as they are not in the shell. This is a good safe food list if you need to check anything else as well. If you are still concerned, however, it is wise to visit a good vet that will treat exotics/hamsters.

What species is your hamster? That can help us with what's best to do. Is your hamster tame?

Just make sure your hamster is eating, drinking, acting normal and going to the toilet ok. I suggest giving your hamster a health check. There are threads on this forum that can help, or you can just search "How to health-check a hamster" on YouTube.

I hope your hamster is ok !

Bitter almonds & almond shells are toxic for hamsters but the almonds we buy to eat ourselves are perfectly safe so I'm sure you have nothing to worry about.

I've just remembered, almonds were the first thing my hamster ate when I brought him home (it was in the mix from his breeeder). You definitely have nothing to worry about with almonds.

I've been avoiding giving almonds to mine, and threw them out when they came in a mix bag. I feel better having read this.

Dear all

Thank you very much for your replies. I am so relief! I give him the almonds you can buy in the supermarket to put in kids lunch boxes. I have given him almonds every week, maybe once a week. He's happy and his normal self. Our hamster is a Syrian hamster, exactly like the one in the photo up right hand corner of this website . He is gorgeous. I bought him for my daughter but I am such an animal lover that I feel like he is mine
Anyway, thanks again.
