The black logs are alpha pellets, in Harry Hamster they are long very shiny & very black in other mixes they are smaller sometimes brown, often not shiny.
And nope my hamsters won't eat them, my degus don't touch their version of these things.
And tbh I know why, me and my step-son decided to try one, they are the most revolting thing I have ever tasted, no wonder the hams don't touch them.

I had been tempted to try one the other night, so glad I didn't lol!

Why bother putting them in the mix? Such a waste of space, why do the people who do this mix not change the black logs with dried mealworms?

They wouldn't be a waste of space if only hamsters had no taste & ate them but I guess if we keep buying hamster food why would the makers bother to change it! Can't win really as almost all the food seems to have them.

None of my hammies eat the logs either. I thought Hazel Nut did at first but then I cleaned out her litter one day and found the missing logs (mind you, her other stash(es) were by her sleeping area and her wheel so this seemed a clear indication what she thought of them). I had heard they were fillers and since my hamsters get fed a mix of store-bought food as well as fresh food, I don't worry about them not getting nutrients or something if they ignore the logs.
