Re: Not eating bigger,,
hehe, no worries!
Remembering back when i was a very very new hammy mummy i didnt give him anything other than his mix. He used to empty the whole bowl and store alot and eat.
But since ive been suplementing his diet with all kinds of new things he just isnt. Infact the past week has almost entirely left his mix.
I was worrying he wasnt eating and fretting he was ill, but then i caught him munching on ANYTHING else he could get his hands on.
Meaning that me worrying he wasnt eating, so giving him all the options i have available to him, was actually just him being very smart! I am such a fool.
"The more i leave me horrible hamster mix, the more veggies and nice things i get!! mwahaha" - Hammys mindset this week!

Ok he sounds like he's just being a clever fussy lad now you say that, clever hamster
On that note - I still vote for feeding whatever mix you like as long as your ham eats it It just might be worth feeding a few less treats in future

Re: Not eating bigger,,
My vet said 15%-17% protein within hamsters premixed food is fine- he said, okay to add another added protein source a few times per week- I should have asked him what is the highest protein that can be harmful to hamsters.. I've read protein percentage higher than 20% on a daily bases can cause health issues, such as kidney problems with hamsters. Not sure if this is true..

Re: Not eating bigger,,
Good plan Dax, and sorry for my essay on the previous page of the thread by the way, food is a complicated subject I seem to have wasted far too much of my life on lol
I hope the new regime works for you
Teddy - I've heard similar things but I reckon even vets would disagree on the perfect figures lol. Food... A complicated nightmare at times if you ask me It is interesting to hear a vets take on it though

Re: Not eating bigger,,
Yes that's true, I guess you can't really know, even with human food opinions change all the time and there is a lot more research on it. I think I got a bit obsessive over food when I realized my hybrids are diabetes prone. But even there you get lots of different opinions from corn has lots of sugar and needs to be picked out to don't pick anything out of the food mix and corn really hasn't got that much sugar etc. Turns out both my dwarfs don't really like corn anymore anyway Also none of them eat all of their mix and then they get treats, so I suppose you can't exactly know how much of what they are actually getting...

Re: Not eating bigger,,
I've been there with the obessive bit, you can tell from my one post lol
I think there're a massive amount of opinions out there and its a pain to tell whats right and whats wrong. Now I think as long as people and their hams are happy with whatever they mix they feed and the hams seem healthy its probably fine
I wanted a perfect diet... Now I've realised it doesn't exist lol. I feed a mix of mixes because it makes me feel happier - in reality the hams'd probably be equally fine on just one of them but... They're happy and we're happy so it works The same goes for everyone else in this thread I think, the humans're happy, the hams're happy so all the diets clearly work (Except for Dax's ham dodging eating the diet, then the human wasn't happy so it clearly didn't work - but that ham does deserve credit for their intelligence lol)
I'm glad you're happy with what yours eat anyway and its been really interesting for me to hear different opinions on the subject and see what other advice people could give on this thread

I agree.. the most important is as long as hamster is healthy, and human is happy and comfortable with how/what they are feeding their hamsters. Just like people, hamsters are not created all the same- sometimes it's better to cater to your hamsters individual needs. .

Re: Not eating bigger,,
For the record, does anyones ham actual EAT the black logs? Mine can pilfer everything else from the food bowl, and still leave all the black cylinder thingies. I think they're trying to tell me something.
It could be worse, I see....they could start peeing on the blasted things.....
