Are these safe for Daisy
Okay folks,
I was given a bag of Steppenlemmigs handmade rodent treats and there's some ingredients in these I'm unsure about. They are from Germany.
It says they are suitable for rodents and rabbits. So a bit broad spectrum. Also, some of the plant/veg names are different to those I'm used to Ireland as we have our own colloquial names for them. I have checked up on the safe/unsafe food list for Syrian hamsters. But these didn't come up....
Here they are:
Ribwort ( I call this greater plantain/ ribbed plantain)
Hazel-nut leaves
Elder-berries ( tree elder, not ground elder)
Raspberry leaves
Beech wood
Nettle (stinging).
Mulberries
Mallow (leaves). Not sure if it's common mallow or marsh (humans can eat them). Tree mallow and musk mallow are a no-no.
Lavender (flower)
Melissa leaves. Again, not sure which type, but all the ''melissa'' plants are part of the mint family. I think it's what you call lemon balm in USA. It's either melissa or balm mint here.
You see, the raspberry and hazel nut leaves, elder berries and the nettles I would eat myself......so could Daisy eat them too?
All the blinking treats are green cubes or slightly darker green cubes. One is pink though, so I can presume that is the strawberry one......
Before I give one to Daisy, could some one please give me some advice?

Re: Are these safe for Daisy
Okay I found through searching and trawling through some papers ( I'm meant to be working.....) that majority of these plants are okay.
I'm undecided and can't seem to see anything to suggest these are safe or unsafe:
Stinging nettles
Mallow
Lavender
Elder-berries
Mulberries

I can't imagine stinging nettles would be pleasant for anything to eat, to be honest... :/

Re: Are these safe for Daisy
Hi NiceCrocs, I believe they've been cooked, so the urticaric hairs are destroyed. Fresh stinging nettle soup is actually delicious, you really have to try it. That, or blanch they like spinach and serve with lots of proper butter( maybe its the butter that makes them so tasty.....) Nettles are also highly nutritious......for humans, just I'm not so sure about hamsters.
Oh and I just found out that marsh mallow and common mallow are safe for hamsters. Now I'm just down to:
Nettles
Lavender
Elder berries
Mulberries

Re: Are these safe for Daisy
The nettle that is edible or the one's I eat are the common stinging nettle or urtica dioica subspecies dioica. It's the only native one found in Ireland. I'm not sure about the edibility of other nettle species from other countries......you'll need to check it out. It makes excellent chicken feed if the young leaves in spring are used and chopped very very finely....full of vitamins.

Re: Are these safe for Daisy
Right, a bit more research: nettles if cooked or blanched are okay for a hamster in small amounts. A tiny wee dose of lavender florets is okay too apparently. I'm not too sure. I'm abiding by the rule of if it's toxic to me it will be toxic for her.
So:
Elderberries
Mulberries
Can't decide about the lavender.

Re: Are these safe for Daisy
Germany is much better on hamster care than we are so I would think they're definitely all safe...they have much bigger minimum cage sizes and really go for the natural theme and have a lot more variety and choice in food and treats.I've used the treats myself(zooplus) and the hammies LOVED them

Re: Are these safe for Daisy
Rodipet sells a 'vital herb' mixture for hamsters that includes plaintain, hops, nettle, dandelion, parsley and cornflowers, so nettle should be fine. They also sell things with hibiscus, marigold, chamomile, rose petals and echincacea - all quite simple herbs.
They also sell elderberries as a snack for hamsters. They don't sell anything with mulberries or lavender in (I did a search on their website in German for mulberries and lavender!)
So everything sounds fine for hamsters except possibly mulberries and lavender. I can't see lavender would be a problem and they sell lavender scented bedding I believe.
So mulberries is the main unknown, but maybe if you go by what hamsters shouldn't eat - that isn't in the list of no-no's I believe. So I expect it will be fine. I don't think he would eat it if he didn't like it! Charlie doesn't like blueberries.

Re: Are these safe for Daisy
The only thing on the list I'm not totally sure about is the mulberries but I really can't find any reason why they wouldn't be safe. I'm not sure but I think they're quite similar to blackberries & mine love those.
