Uneaten food
I change my hamsters food as it has been sitting in the bowl for a day or two. You know, the pellets, muesli etc (not fresh food) and replace it with fresher pellets and muesli. I tip the bowls into a tub and have a fair amount of uneaten food. I am not one to just put a teaspoon of food in a cage, I like to think there is plenty of food about for the hams as they are out at night and I am in bed so I cant be there to feed them all the time they are awake (as most people are). I give the uneated food to the wild birds as there are bits of dried veg, nuts and seeds as well as the pellets and other bits. The 4 pigeons that live local in the trees have what the small birds dont eat. If seeds are not eaten, they are germinated and grow into what ever they are, wheat, oats etc.
What do you do with your uneaten food when changing the bowls. ?

Re: Uneaten food
The wild birds in my garden are a bit fussy lol so it goes in the compost bin to feed the worms &, eventually, the garden!

Re: Uneaten food
I save the uneaten hams food, and store it in a zip lock bag. Then once the bag starts to fill, my daughter and I feed the ducks geese, and swans. There's a lake directly behind our house. Some of the uneaten food I put out for the birds, too.

Re: Uneaten food
That is a very good question! Something I hadn't thought about before. I'm afraid I just tip it in the bin, but in future will save it for the ducks! Wasn't sure if it was suitable for ducks - normally we just give them porridge oats and bird seed.

Re: Uneaten food
Winter is coming and the birds will be pleased for the extra food put out for them. I also put out fat balls and fat cakes for the birds. I dont know if the two local hedgehogs will eat any of the pellets. I know they only eat meat, but they eat the cat biscuits too. They supposed to eat slugs and snails, but they dont touch them in my garden cos the slugs still eat the plants.

Re: Uneaten food
I usually wait until the food bowl is empty (or has the black pellets in) or if it's not empty after a few days, I will just chuck the food. I used to empty and refill everyday but now I have 6 hammies, that would be expensive to do

Re: Uneaten food
I guess saving it all in bags and using it to throw at weddings instead of rice is not a 'green' solution, right?

Re: Uneaten food
It would be better for the pigeons! So environmentally friendly in that way for sure!

Lol! Depends how hard you throw it! Some of those little biscuits could give someone concussion. And as for the black logs - they could poke an eye out. Harry Hamster food is probably colourful enough for confetti, but I don't suppose the bride and groom would appreciate if if there were any poo pellets in amongst it, or if it had been wee'd on (Charlie used to wee in his food bowl at one time because it was in a corner!)
