My first bag of harry hamster was a lot of dried veg in it and the hams went straight to the bowl instead of to the wagg bowl. The second bag I bought had more crap in it that the hamsters leave. The hams were going to the wagg food instead. They still prefer the wagg food more than any other I put in the cage. I got some muesli food with strawberries in and they dont eat it as much as the wagg. They completely ignore some of the pellets, (look like small fish food ball pellets). They would be good for a BB gun. lol

I have been tossing any extra in the trash but I like the idea of composting it! I was considering composting her bedding since it's paper based and possibly poo (though didn't when I learned that apparently if you feed your hammy any meat--insects count as meat, right?--you couldn't be feeding their poos to the worms) but didn't even think about any extra food she might have lying around.

I compost all of the bedding, even if it has food in it. I don't count any insect residue as meat, as the compost bins are full of insects. The dead crickets or meal worms aren't an issue in the compost bin as it is not like the "meat" we are used to and definitely should not be composted.

The crickets and meal worms will break down and won't affect the composting process but certainly chicken, beef, pork, lamb etc should not be composted including dog food etc.

Dried food from bowls is given to the birds.
