Homemade hamster mix?
Because I've got two hybrids I'm conscious of the amount of sugar they're eating due to the while diabetes thing. So I'm considering doing my own mix of food for them, using some pre bought hamster museli, taking out the bits they don't eat (e.g. The brown pellets) and the dried corn, but I'm not sure what to add? I've read lentils are good, I've also seen people add dog and cat biscuits, but I'm not 100% sure so I'd like some advice on what homemade mixes people use, thank you anything is appreciated

Re: Homemade hamster mix?
I don't take anything out of the mix, Burgess supa dwarf hamster harvest as it doesn't hurt for them to have some corn or peas & they leave the pellets anyway. I think it's too hard to get the balance of nutrients right if you take stuff out or just feed a homemade mix although I know some people do it.
I do give mine a treat mix, small amounts in addition to their daily food, which contains a base of budgie tonic seed, flax, hemp, millet, sunflower, safflower & I also give them the occasional pumpkin seed & monkey nut or a piece of kitten kibble. They also get about half a puppy bonio every couple of weeks, it lasts them ages generally.
I've had food with lentils in but never added it or given it separately myself.
I also give mine lots of sprouted seeds, fenugreek, red clover, kale, broccoli & chia mostly.
I've probably forgotten a few things as usual but that's my basic feed!

Re: Homemade hamster mix?
The burgess hamster harvest has banana but not their dwarf mix.
My hams like this mix too JR Farm Feast for Dwarf Hamsters. Free P&P on orders £29+ at zooplus! I give mostly burgess but this every few days, the proteins a bit low but otherwise it's not bad.

Re: Homemade hamster mix?
I bought the science select one today because the little pet store where I live has started stocking it and I've read it's good

Re: Homemade hamster mix?
I'll be interested to know how your hams go with that. I tried it half & half with mix for mine but they wouldn't eat it, I prefer the mix as I really like them to forage for it but if I had a ham that actually had diabetes & needed to monitor their food intake much more closely I'd probably reconsider it.
