Default baby food

This is a post I accidentally made in hamster chat. oops. I don't know how to delete it though, so I thought I'd just repost in the right area for now.

I like to give CB baby food for some added variety in her diet- veggies! And fruit for dessert? Yum!

I was wondering though if anyone else did- obviously a hamster can't finish a jar of the stuff in one sitting (or ten for that matter!), so I refrigerate it and sometimes give her bits of it for weeks. I read on actual baby forums not to keep it more than two days, but she seems to be doing fine off it.

Any experiences to share, guys?

Best before or use by times/dates are really only a guide but I'd be a bit wary of keeping a jar of baby food that long tbh.
Two of mine really aren't that keen but my Chinese does enjoy her broccoli & cauliflower in cheese sauce as a rare treat, as she's the only one eating it most of it just goes in the bin!

I've heard some hamster owners fill an ice cube tray with what's left and freeze it, then just defrost a block at a time for their hamsters.

I've always resorted to throwing mine out because I never knew how long to keep it for.

I haven't got a jar to check this but I'm pretty sure it says use within 2 days of opening, I know there is a little leeway with this so I once I've opened one I always keep it the fridge and throw it away within 3 days of opening

Just noticed this thread after responding to the other

I freeze the baby food in ice cube trays and give my Izzy a cube every night (she has no top teeth so struggles to eat all her mix). The texture will change a little after thawing, but Izzy seems to prefer it that way anyway.

Ice cube trays are a great idea, but I still find them to be too much for my hams. So I put the food in a ziploc bag and pat it down so it's flat, then freeze it. When I want to give it to my hams I just break off a couple chunks and let them thaw on a plastic lid that I save for this purpose
