True dat. :P It's more the buffalo and large mealworms that you have to do that with, because they do fight back. If hammie decides to pouch them they could cause some damage to the inside of the pouch. They have have quite sharp little feet which they use to latch on to a surface, if you've ever felt this on your hand you can really feel it! Not good when they decide to do it in hammie's mouth. :S

One other reason why I (and the hams) prefer waxies.
However, they should only be an occasional treat, as they are extremely rich and fattening. Great if you have young or poorly/underweight hams, but for healthy fluffs don't feed too many. Also, they are so scrumptious (apparently!) and rich that the hams often become really fussy with their normal food.
I normally give my lot one each once a week. Sometimes I'll give them a second as a reward, like when Pipkin is brave and takes sometime from my hand (which is a massive achievement for my shy little robo girl) but I try not to give any more than that. Todd in particular is a little toad for waxies. :L
