Post Rationing protein type foods

How often does everyone feed mealworms and scrambled egg/boiled egg?

I'm not sure how to ration it for Pixel - she's coming up 6 weeks so dont want to overload her but I know that she'll need the protein for growth.

Thanks in adavance

Hi. At this young age, hamsters need higher protein as you say. But as a maintenance diet, they also require a high protein to prevent deficiencies. Usually around the 18% protein mark. A good commercial hamster mix will provide this without the need to add additional extras, although hemp seeds and dry mealworms are a nice treat, so a couple every other day won`t harm. x

There is such thing as too much protein in adult hamsters and more so in elderly hamsters, excess protein is a strain on their kidneys when they dont need it. For a young hamster (below 6 months) there is little chance of overdoing protein. I spend a lot of time on the german boards and the general consensus there is a 15% protein base mix will be fine for their entire life, but the extras fed should change with age plenty for a young ham and none for an elderly ham and varying amounts in between. As your hamster is 6 weeks old there is no need to worry bout overdoing it

Thank you for your help with that, I didnt want her getting a poorly tummy.

I tried her with a mealworm (freezedried) last night and she recoiled in terror and ran away from it lol. I then left it for her to find and she looked horrified and refused to use that part of her cage poor little thing. So we're gonna stick with egg etc.

Huge thanks again x
