Thumbs down I can't believe they would say not to feed fruit!

I sometimes like to visit Yahoo Answers and answer some questions about pets. I was scrolling through the questions when I came across one about a dwarf hamster eating a banana. I clicked on it and the question said "So I gave him Literally a centimeter price of banana but is that ok? He has a huge cage made from two play pens connected with two small cages inside and 3 wheels trust me he gets a bunch if exercise. Will he get diabetes? HELP?" so I wondered why she thought it wasn't okay for them to have fruits. The answers made me even more confused, the both stated that it was fine but not to give him any more fruit. Why? Why would you think that? Fruit is part of a healthy hamster's diet!

No its not... Some hamsters are best not having fruit. Particuarly the diabetes prone species of dwarf hamster - fruit isn't essential and diabetes can be deadly.

Dwarfs are prone to diabetes so limiting fruit is a good idea, but tiny bits won't hurt him. Certain fruits in limited quantities are great for hamster health.

All dwarf hamsters other than Robos are prone to diabetes, especially hybrid "Russian" hamsters, so even natural sugars from fruit such as banana can be harmful and needs to be fed cautiously if at all.

Some owners even prefer to avoid even the vegetables that are higher in natural sugars as well.

some dwarfs such as hyrids are prone to diabetes so it is oft recomended to avoid fruit due to the natural sugars in them . chinese hamsters are also prone tto diabetes i think

It's best for diabetes prone species (Chinese and hybrids) to have limited sugar diets. This means no fruit -- and it is often extended to no peas, corn or carrots, as they are all fairly high in sugar too -- as well as nothing with sugar/honey/molasses in All fruit is full of fructose, basically fruit sugar
