Default Selective feeding (burges dwarf mix)

Hi,

I got two dwarf boys last weekend and started them on the burges for dwarf hamsters. They seem to like it but im finding they are completely ignoring the brown pellets and im having to top up their bowl afew times a day. They are getting about 2 to 3 table spoons and im having to throw out half the food every day. Should I just leave the pellets and not top up the food in the hope that they will eat them? I dont want the poor things to stave but surely if they are hungry enough they would eat them. I also give them two types of veg a day, tiny little amounts and bits of cooked whole wheat pasta and maybe brown rice. But they seem to be always hungry whenever they hear my voice they come running out to there bowls and run around them in circles and sticking their heads in as if to say... " Where's our food, mammy "

Can anyone recommend a dwarf hamster food that doesnt have many of the pellets? Thanks

Er... That sounds like a lot of food for a pair of dwarf hams. The brown pellets are probably alfalfa and I'm afraid they're in almost every food. I don't think it was in the JR farm foods we bought though

I suspect they're hoarding it rather than eating it all, they really don't need that much! My Robo gets a teaspoon a day, my Syrian gets two. Have you cleaned them out since you got them? I bet you'll find a huge hoard of food somewhere next time you clean them out

I feed 1tsp for dwarf & 2tsp for Syrian per day too & I leave it down til it's gone to avoid selective feeding. They always take their favourites first...

I think your hammies are having great fun stashing food somewhere & definitely don't need that much. I find on a day that I feed a treat (stick of millet or something) they will take less mix anyway. Don't give too many treats or they won't be getting a balanced diet.

Hope you are enjoying your new hammies

I find Patrick always leaves the green pellets and the corn. I am mixing Science Selective with his Harry Hamster and he eats those biccies okay, so I know he's getting a balanced mix.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. It sounds like a good idea to maybe mix different food. I was thinking of ordering the JR farm feast for dwarf hamsters and hamster food menu plus from zooplus and seeing how they get on with that because the burges has a lot of the pellets so there is a good bit of food being thrown out. I am going to give their cage a bit of a clean out this evening when they venture out in their exercise balls so i will see then what they are hoarding. I didnt want to disturb them too much for the first week, especially with all the bickering they were doing. It seems to have settled in the last two days though.... Phew

I think hamster food menu plus contains leeks, which are on the bad-for-hams food list

Thanks for letting me know kissa. Gosh who makes these hamster foods? It seems very hit or miss, whether they will actually be good for our hams
